Whip Count (No. 13 in a Series) McNerney on the Fence
March 09, 2010 3:39 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:
During a town hall last month in Morgan Hill, California, Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) indicated that he would not vote in for the Senate’s version of the health care bill, The Morgan Hill Times reports.
McNerney voted yes in November when the House voted in November.
"Audience members decried the health insurance industry's plans to raise premiums next year and the prohibitive cost of healthcare for those who are uninsured," Michael Moore of The Morgan Hill Times wrote, "McNerney criticized the current version of healthcare reform passed by the U.S. Senate for the deals it makes with certain states, its lack of a public option and the inadequate number of people it extends coverage to. He said he would not vote in favor of that version of the bill if it comes back to the House."
As we’ve previously covered, 220 members of Congress voted for the bill when Pelosi brought the House legislation to a vote.
Since then, four yes votes are no more: Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, R-La., has said he won’t vote for final passage, Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hi., retired to run for governor, Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., also retired, and Rep. John Murtha, D-Penn., died.
That means to pass the Senate bill, Pelosi starts out with 216 members of Congress who votes yes last time. With the pending retirement of Rep. Eric Massa D-N.Y., there will soon be only 431 members of Congress total, meaning a majority will be 216 votes. Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga., has postponed his own retirement and told GOP leaders he will likely stay through the health care vote.
UPDATE: A spokeswoman for McNerney called to take issue with how the congressman’s position is characterized in The Morgan Hill Times. She says as of now Congressman McNerney is not leaning one way or the other with his vote. He will wait to see a proposal that fixes his major concerns about the Senate bill and depending on that will guide his decision. She said it would be wrong to say though that he would vote no on the Senate Health Care bill without the fixes right now.

ANYONE who supports this President is a traitor to the Constitution and should be regarded by family and friends as such.

I expelled any liberal friends from my life. If you say you believe in freedom, and still have friends that support this President, your commitment to freedom and to the Constitution is suspect.

I'm with Obama in wanting an up or down vote by March 18. If the House doesn't pass the Senate bill, it's over. And it doesn't appear that it can. I don't see why we should drag this out.
I think the real issue is mistrust of the Senate and Obama among House members. You can't get people to vote for a bill that says X on the promise that the Senate will amend it so it says Y, especially when the Senate explicitly rejected Y previously. But if you vote for the Senate bill, Obama is within his constitutional rights as president to sign it and then make a speech crying crocodile tears, saying, "I'm so sad that Washington is broken, but we've got this bill and we can build on it."
If House members don't like the Senate bill, the only intelligent vote is No.

Of course who the heck cares anymore the Dems have thrown all rule books out the window.

Nonsense. Both bills have passed. The Senate and the House bills have passed with majorities.
Why does democracy upset the Republican right so much that they have to pretend it's somehow evil?
Do unto the Republicans as the Republicans would do unto you. Pass the bill.

"That means to pass the Senate bill, Pelosi starts out with 216 members of Congress who votes yes last time. "
Sunlen, you keep saying this, but the sentence makes no sense. The members of the House did not vote on the Senate bill.
