From ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Yunji de Nies:
President Obama, the first family and the president's friends from Chicago and Hawaii spent one of the first sunny days of his vacation at a barbecue on the North Shore at the home of his Hawaii friend Bobby Titcomb.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton says the president played volleyball and hung out on the beach with family and friends.
Some members of the traveling White House staff were invited to the barbecue as well.
The Obamas spent more than six hours at the barbecue and other than the president's daily morning workout, it was the only activity Thursday.
The family is now back at their Kailua beach front rental for the evening.
