30 Years After Shooting, James Brady Visits White House Press Briefing Room Named In His Honor

James Brady visited the White House briefing room, which is named in his honor, this evening. He appeared with the newest White House press secretary, Jay Carney. President Obama dropped by a private conversation the two, along with his wife Sarah Brady, had earlier today in the White House.

“We spoke of large capacity magazines,” Brady reported. His wife added that the conversation was “very general,” and they did not get into specifics during their conversation with the president.

Mrs. Brady said the president agreed with “everything that we are for,” but that the president said it takes some time. Jim told the president, as recalled from his wife, during the meeting that “it takes two years to make minute rice.”

Asked if the White House can push harder for gun control measures Mr. Brady said, “You can never push too hard.”

During the meeting Brady showed the president his blue bracelet for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords which says “Gabby (heart) Peace.” Later in the briefing room he said of the congresswoman’s shootings, “There were so many similarities to mine that it hurt a lot.” Brady flashed the peace sign with two fingers and smiled.

Jay Carney said that it is an “incredible honor” to have Jim Brady in the briefing room and said he is one of the “great, great predecessors,” that he looks up to.

“You cannot have it,” Brady joked to Carney of the room.

Carney said it would always be the James S. Brady Briefing Room.

Brady said his favorite moment in the briefing room was hearing Helen Thomas say “thank-you,” the indication that the briefing was over.

“I know that feeling,” Carney agreed.

As Brady’s family started to filter out of the briefing room he flashed thumbs-up sign to press.
