First Lady to Kids: READ!

From Tahman Bradley:

Today is Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Librarian of Congress James Billington stressed the importance of reading at a national reading event this morning at the Library of Congress. Mrs. Obama and Secretary Duncan read to roughly 300 Virginia, Maryland and D.C. elementary students who wore Dr. Seuss hats.

The first lady told the kids that they'd start out by reading something fun and that she and the secretary are big Dr. Seuss fans. Mrs. Obama and Duncan took turns reading parts of Green Eggs and Hams. They were both pretty energetic in their reads, pausing at moments so that the kids could finish parts of the text.

Mrs Obama: I don't like them here and there. I will not eat them...

Kids: Anywhere!

The kids also spent some time with a group of celebrities who read to them.

National Education Association President Dennis Monroe told the audience 45 million people across the country will take part in the national campaign. It was his idea that the crowd wish Dr. Seuss happy birthday.

In a presidential proclamation, President Obama established March 2 as National Read Day 2011.
