New Campaign Bus Will Carry 2012 Presidential Candidates with Greater Security

ABC News' Ann Compton reports:

The US Secret Service will take delivery next month of two campaign-style buses to provide heightened security for the President on bus tours and rural trips during the 2012 campaign.

Agent Ed Donovan in Washington tells ABC News the vehicles were long overdue in the Secret Service fleet because the Secret Service was never satisfied with the old practice of renting buses and retrofitting them with added security.

“Designing our own vehicle really affords us a level of security that we can’t achieve by leasing a bus and outfitting it with temporary equipment,” Donovan said in an interview. He would not reveal what high tech additions have been added, nor would he divulge the price tag.

The vehicles will not be emblazoned with campaign signs, because like the presidential armored limousine and other motorcade vehicles, the buses are government property. They will be available for any presidential or vice presidential travel in rural areas or on the kind of campaign bus tours candidates have been making for decades.

There will be two of the special tour buses. The Republican nominee for president will be able to campaign in one as well.
