President Obama Misses Anonymity, People-Watching

In the White House state dining room on Saturday, President Obama met with editors and publishers of Hearst Magazines and echoed a common complaint of previous presidents.

"I just miss — I miss being anonymous," he said. "I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can't take a walk."

President Harry S Truman once called the White House a "glamorous prison.”

The president put his golf habit within that context.

"It's the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours at a stretch," he said."I just want to go through Central Park and watch folks passing by...Spend the whole day watching people. I miss that."

The president also said he doesn’t like the "kabuki dance" of Washington, DC, partisan battles before serious negotiations begin.

Heart magazines include Cosmo, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Popular Mechanics, and Redbook. The publications provided the quotes to the Houston Chronicle.
