Schwarzenegger campaign chief Steve Schmidt accused the Angelides campaign of employing a "dirty trick" after the Angelides campaign acknowledged its involvement in obtaining and leaking to the news media a controversial audio recording of Schwarzenegger from his state Web site.

Schmidt called the Angelides campaign tactic an "improper action, an unethical thing for the Angelides campaign to do. . . an attempted dirty trick and they've been found out." As you may recall from last week, an audio tape recording of Gov. Schwarzenegger talking about "black blood" mixing with "Latino blood" to create the "hot" fiery personality of a Republican Latina lawmaker.

The lawmaker supports Schwarzenegger, says she uses those words to describe herself at times, and was not offended by the remarks.

Today, the campaign manager for Phil Angelides (D-CA), Schwarzenegger's opponent, acknowledged that two Angelides campaign workers downloaded the material from the governor's web site and leaked it to the press. Campaign manager Cathy Calfo claims this was done without Angelides' approval or knowledge. The California Highway Patrol is investigating how the material was downloaded.

"No one hacked," Calfo said at a news conference on Tuesday. "They accessed information that was available to the public." Schwarzenegger's legal affairs secretary said the material was behind a password-protected wall.
