Bush Signs SAFE Port Legislation
October 13, 2006 2:25 PM
ABC's Karen Travers reports: President Bush signed the SAFE (Safe Accountability For Every) Port Act of 2006 this morning and said the legislation will make the United States "more prepared, more prosperous and more secure."
"[W]with the bill I sign today, we renew a clear commitment: We will work tirelessly to keep our nation safe and our ports open for business," the President said. "We're going to protect our ports. We're going to defend this homeland. And we're going to win the war on terror."
The legislation authorized $3.4 billion over five years for security and safety measures, including radiation detectors at the nation's 22 largest ports (listed below)
The President did not mention the provision of the bill that cracks down on Internet gambling. The provision tacked onto the port security bill prohibits people from using credit cards and electronic checks on Internet gambling sites by prohibiting banks and credit card companies from accepting payments.
President Bush said the legislation will protect the nation's ports in three key ways:
strengthen physical security measures at the nation’s ports by with greater technology
the President said the bill authorizes modern inspection equipment so Customs agents can check inside cargo containers for dangerous materials without opening them.
2. provide legislative authority for key elements the nations' port security strategy:
Container Security Initiative
Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism
Domestic Nuclear Detection Office
3. require the DHS to establish a plan to "speed the resumption of trade in the event of a terrorist attack on our ports or waterways"

Los Angeles
New York-Newark, Elizabeth, N.J.
Charleston, S.C.
Savannah, Ga.

These legislations labeled with branding-based acronyms give me no confidence and seem so superficial, consequences of little minds motivated by the perks of power, not national interest. SAFE = Safe Accountability For Every {port}. Seems like SAFEP to me. "Every" port--every one? No, only 22. There are more than 22 ports in America that receive international trade, and I live in one of them. And why does accountability need to be made safe? Safe for the politicians who are nervous about holding on to power? The acronym should be FATP, Forget About the Pages.

Great to see Bush doing something to make America safer - but if this is really about making us safer, I'd love to know why the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), has been meeting with representatives for Iranian arms dealer and Iran-Contra scandal figure Fereidoun Mahdavi.
Remember, these guys helped sell the US lies about Iraq having enriched uranium - why are our congressional leaders meeting with people the CIA has already told us are liars?
