Bush: US Does Not Torture

Share

October 27, 2006 12:45 PM

A very terse President Bush said today that the U.S. does not torture, in response to a question about the recent comments from Vice President Cheney about terrorist techniques. Cheney said in an interview with WDAY Radio in Fargo, N.D that a dunk in the water is a “no-brainer” for him if it would save lives.

“This country doesn't torture.  We're not going to torture,” Bush said. “We will interrogate people we pick up off the battlefield to determine whether or not they've got information that'd be helpful to protect the country.”

Iran
Asked about Iran doubling its enrichment capacity, President Bush said this means the U.S. must double its efforts to work with the international community to “persuade the Iranians that there is only isolation from the world if they continue working forward on such a program.”

“I've read the speculation about that's what they may be doing. But whether they've doubled it or not, the idea of Iran having a nuclear weapon is unacceptable,” he said. “And it's unacceptable for the United States and it's unacceptable to nations we're working with in the United Nations to send a common message.”

Election
Bush reiterated his favorite new line of late, that the Democrats have already started to measure the drapes in their new offices before the election takes place. “In other words, they're taking the people's vote for granted,” he said. “This election is going to be determined by how our candidates run locally. And I believe if they continue to emphasize the big issues -- keeping taxes low and protecting the American people -- we'll win”

The President said he sees enthusiasm amongst Republicans who are saying they will work to protect Americans and keep taxes low.

"The President said he sees enthusiasm amongst Republicans who are saying they will work to protect Americans and keep taxes low." That is actually a misquote, it should read "The President said he sees desperation amongst Republicans who are lamenting the potential loss of their ability to protect corporate fraud and insure that the richest amongst us pay no taxes".

If the US does not torture then why are several people in jail for
doing so. The national "deceiver"
is at it again. Doing right is much harder than doing wrong.

Has "torture" worked for us? I just heard Bill O'Reilly on Oprah say that "waterboarding" Sheik Khalid Mohammed persuaded him to reveal details that led to the arrest of 14 others......and from these arrests, we were protected from several attacks on thousands of innocents. So says Cheney & Co. BUT Is there any way to verify this official information?

Bushy may not condone torture, but murder is quite another thing.

And George, you are KILLING me with your stupidity, greed, and bloodlust.

Did I mention your obvious snubbing of "seperation of church and state"?

What happened to this country? Was I cryogenically frozen for 1000 years? How did we manage to screw up so bad, and lose the respect of the entire world in such a short time.

Oh yeah, the GOP. My bad.

Dear Mr. Vice-President,
Could you be any less ethical?
You believe in torture and like to swear. Shooting your friends is one of your hobbies? Plus you went hunting with a Supreme Court Justice who was presiding over your case (that you won). Oh, Haliburton is also making a ton of money in Iraq. (Your former company)What will you do next?

It matters little what the offical verbage coming out of the Executive Branch is. The unfortunate perception that so many have in the USA, and abroad is that their verbage is simply not credible. Perception is more important than reality. The strategic handlers who developed the packaging of the Executive Banch and the GOP understood "Branding" when their platform was sold to voters. Unfortunately, the voting audience, after so many examples of incompetence, polarization, breach of trust, and untruths will no longer give them the benefit of belief.

Iraq, we should have never been there in the first place. There was never any weapons of mass destruction found, its all about oil and republicans wanting to make there wallets thicker.Read the news people, even our soilders say its a lost cause and the deaf toll is climbing..Do we have to have as many soilders die as there was in 911..I have a son in the active Military and he has lost serveral friends in the war.Terroriest are to blame for 911, but if we had better people at the Air-port security check points, they would have never made it on board..I worked at the Air port in Lawton Ok. during 1997 and I was a security check point screener..I took many of knifes, scissors, etc. off of passengers boarding the planes. The only problem was is when my supervisor was there she would give it back to them..I turned this in to the Corp Office of the Company who had this contract, and nothing was done..DID YOU HEAR ME!! Nothing was done..Its easy for most of Americans to say, keep are soilders there, they are keeping us safe..Thats BS. Osama bin Laden im sure is dead, we havent heard anything from him in I believe a few years now.Its time we show all the Republicans, that we no longer support the war in Iraq, and to bring our sons, daughters, husband and wifes home, by joining me and casting your Vote for the Democrats, these elections..God bless And Watch Over Our Soilders

Just remember the secret overseas torture sites that were set up by our government (Bush/Cheney). They shipped off prisoners to countries where they were tortured. This information came out against the wishes of the Bush administration. Bush and Cheney can say they don't torture until they are red in the face. I don't believe a word they say on anything. They are liars.

I'm neither a democrat nor a republican. But I do vote. I rarely believe what a politician says. but George Bush has set a new standard for deceptive politicians. What should we call him: "Liar in chief" or "Deceiver in chief" or "Manipulator in chief"? I predict that history will judge him very harshly.

What part of the president's statement have you dems posting on this do you disagree with? What is he lying about? Anything specific? The US does not torture. Making a terrorist "think" he is going to drown is not torture, unlike what is done in the middle east on a regular basis. How about some condemnation for beheadings, etc. and actually supporting your country regardless of whether you agree with some of the policies of the Bush administration? Do you want us to win the war on terror or lose? Have the guts to say "no" if you feel that way, so we know to disregard any of your future posts.

Jay,
Strapping a guy (yes, a guy, since not everyone this happens to is a terrorist) to a board, flipping him upside down and sticking his head in a bucket of water will make him "think" he is drowning. But isn't that "almost" drowning him torturous? The way you state it, the interogator just says "We're going to drown you" and the subject starts talking. That ain't the way it goes, brother. John McCain disagrees with Bush on this, does he NOT support this country, or want to LOSE the war on terror? I am constantly amazed by the war mongering attitude of you neocons - when you defeat a nation, it doesn't just disappear from the face of the earth. After WWII, the US spent billions rebuilding Germany with the Marshall Plan. What is Bush's plan for Iraq? Billion$ have been "allocated" for rebuilding, and yet even in Baghdad they have inadequate power and water infrastructures. NOTHING is being done to win the "hearts and minds" of these people. It will be impossible to be friends and allies of these people 50 years from now, the way Germany is our friend today. The world is not "us versus them", it's just "US".

If waterboarding isn't torture according to Bush, does he think fellatio isn't "sexual relations"?
