Flip-Flopping Denny?

ABC's Lisa Chinn reports: House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), under fire from both sides of the aisle for his actions in the Foley email scandal, was asked directly by a reporter in yesterday's press conference if the leadership had asked for Foley's resignation.

On Monday, Hastert said: "I think Foley resigned almost immediately upon the outbreak of this information, and so we really didn't have a chance to ask him to resign, and I left at the very end of the session, almost, before the very last vote."

But during Tuesday’s radio interview with Rush Limbaugh, he seemed to change his story, saying: "We found out about it, asked him to resign. He did resign. He's gone."  He then repeated that line in a Tuesday interview with Sean Hannity.

GO GET HIM LISA

I think Hastert knows that he will be asked to step down. His story contradicts the accounts of other GOP leaders and he even contradicts himself. The only way out of this mess for the GOP is if they clean house and put in new leaders, that would show that they are taking this seriously and that they do not condone leaders covering up deviant behavior with minors.

Way to stay on him!! Hastert needs to resign NOW.

To ABC News' credit, your going public with the evidence forced Foley to resign, despite Reynold's Chief of Staff who was on loan to Foley to handle the emerging crisis tried to bribe ABC News into not publishing the IMs by offering an exclusive interview with Foley over his pending resignation as the payoff of the bribe to not go public. ABC News (Brian Ross) told him to no deal. Then Foley resigned.

The GOP leadership had NOTHING to do with asking Foley to resign. He was forced to do so because of the public disclosure by ABC News that was about to unfold.

Hastert, like all the rest of the GOP are talking out of both sides of their mouth and lying to cover their butts and do damage control to make the reality that they did NOTHIING to investigate this or to protect anyone other then their own (and the GOPs) exposure on this. In other words, standard GOP operating procedures, only this time the issue is to visceral to be spinnable.

What was the involvement with the Church of Scientology in the molestation of so many boys over the last five years??

What did CoS know, and when did they know it? Did they assist in the coverup??

If I was a Republican, I could say "I take responsibility" for bad things while blaming them on someone else.

If I was a Republican, I could point to good signs for rich people while pretending that those signs meant something good for middle class Americans.

If I was a Republican, I could pretend that knowing about something terrible and not doing anything to stop it was a a plot by my political opponents - and the press would repeat it for me.

Too bad I'm not a Republican. At least as a Democrat, I can live with myself.

Way to go ABC News! The Republican leadership needs to step down NOW! If it were not for ABC News, Republican leadership would continue to ALLOW Mr. Foley (ironically the man in charge of protecting children from exploitation)to continue to prey upon children. When will we wake up to the fact that the fox is in the hen house w/ these Republicans. This is classic Republican hypocracy. Way to stay on it ABC News!

and i still see those ridiculous "W" bumper stickers plastered on cars!? They used to irritate me but now I appreciate them. I consider them to be kind of like a "mentally disabled" WARNING sticker. You know, driver has head up rear - please approach with caution" kind of. Maybe they should get special parking places?

This entire scandal is just sick. It goes a long way to show us what the leadership of this country prefers to protect -- themselves.

being from IL, ole Denny should have been forced out after he bought huge amounts of real estate in the country, and then made sure that there was new roads to be built so it could be developed. I think he made $2 million on the deal, not too bad for a former wrestling coach. Who said crime doesn't pay?

Its like Christmas everyday when I read the news! Ol'e Denny looks like he's going to have a stroke any minute. My predicion: He's gone by Monday.

Maybe the repub.s are not perfect but if you guys keep talking the way that you are, we will all be in the unemployment line because the demo's can't live with us supporting ourselves. You know its true, politians suck but are the demo's any better? Are they not subject to the same weaknesses? Remember the Clinton years? How short is your attention span? why do you think this came out now? How long do you think they have been sitting on this news? c'mon, wake up and smell the 2000's, its just dirty politics as usuall.

WE want the Speaker to stay on as the leader of the Republicans. That way the Republicans will be totally defeated in the election. Can you imagine how he can possibly be trusted with this story?

Posted by: Michael | Oct 4, 2006 10:20:35 AM

It's so cynical. You lie to the "ditto heads" at Limbaugh and Hannity who live in a separate universe.

Posted by: Pierre | Oct 4, 2006 10:53:04 AM

hassert and his henchmen have covered up their corruption, along with this administration for over 5 years, no oversite, accountibility, or investigations. this congress, and administration are the sleaziest bunch of morons on the face of the earth!! now its payback time for for these SCUM Bags.

You can bet Hastert and GOP all the way to Bush was aware of tris travesty. This lewd predator allowed to roam the halls of Washington attempting to seduce under age boys is disgusting and digrace to those that permitted this conduct, and covered it up.Thank you ABC news for not going along with GOP cover up.

My grandfather was a Republican, my dad was a Republican, believing in a strong defense and that democracy could cure all of capitilism's ills - I have been a Republican.
It is clear that Capitalism has entirely taken over the Democratic process and is the new Amreican political system. Our President did not protect us form our enemies for fear of losing a few $$, our Peesident sent our children to die so an oil pipeline could be built to make him a few $, our congess allows industries that donate more than any INDIVIDUAL could be allowed, to write legislation that harms the citizenry, and finally to hold on to the power to make more $$, for those in power, our children are given over to pedophiles.
I'm not sure the Democrats are the answer, but I'm giving them the chance. Dems- I'm listening, what do you have to say?

Like rats on a sinking ship the Republican party can't help but eat their own.

It's amusing to watch them push each other under the bus to save their own sickly skins. However, in doing so, they make it obvious that they are the liars they've ALWAYS been and who can't keep their own stories straight anymore.

This whole party and the Bush Administration is based on lies. So many so, that they can't keep them straight anymore.

Hopefully, the American public can smell a rat and set up their own traps come November.

AS the Speaker of the House, we are seeing the actions of the person who is 2nd in line to be President, should the circumstances (GOD forbid) even present themselves. As such, we MUST have someone who is more concerned with the welfare of the American people than being reelected. Democrat or Republican, no exceptions. It just happens to be a republican running this show. There cannot be any handoff or blame assigned to another party. Rep Hasert must accept the consequences of his failure to act!! Step aside. If we would not want him as president, why would we want him to stay on as SOTH???
