McCain In Iowa: "I'd Just Commit Suicide" If Democrats Take Control Of Senate
October 18, 2006 4:21 PM
ABC News' David Chalian reports: While campaigning for Republicans in Iowa today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) jokingly said "I think I'd just commit suicide," when he was asked how he would react if the Democrats gained majority control of the United States Senate.
"The Republicans standing beside him burst into laughter," reports Radio Iowa's Kay Henderson. "'I don't want to face that eventuality because I don't think it's going to happen. . . I think it's going to be tough, but I think we'll do o.k.'"
Click here for more of Henderson's reporting on McCain's Hawkeye State trip: LINK
Winning the six seats necessary to gain control of the Senate has seemed like a long shot for Democrats for most of the year. In the last week or so, many analysts seem to believe that if the national wind blows strong enough in a Democratic direction, it may not just be the House at risk for Republicans, but that the Senate may fall into Democratic hands as well.
Democrats are targeting seven states. Their best pickup opportunities appear to be in Pennsylvania, Montana, Rhode Island, and Ohio. If they can win two of the remaining three targets (Tennessee, Virginia, and Missouri) while holding onto their one vulnerable seat in New Jersey, they will be in the majority. Though the chances of that happening are more likely today than they have been all year, it is still somewhat of a triple bank shot.

What a stupid remark. And I say McCain is the most senisble Republican that I actually kind of like. He may be digging his political coffin if he keeps saying idiotic thing like this. (Well, not that I'd vote for him anyway.)
GORE 08.

I can't believe that someone in a leadership postion in our country, would opt out to suicide(even if joking), when faced with adversity. Now I know it is time for a change.

That's the best idea McCain has ever had.
Posted by: me | Oct 18, 2006 6:40:09 PM
WOW,EVEN THE GOP'S MOST MODERATE SENATOR STILL WORKING HARD TO POLARIZE OUR COUNTRY.DOES MR. MCCAIN THINK WE NEED MORE QUALITY REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS LIKE RANDY CUNNUNGHAM, MARK FOLEY,AND BOB NEY.
REMEMBER MR MCCAIN SUICIDE IS NOT A FAMILY VALUE
Posted by: BRIAN WOODRUFF | Oct 18, 2006 7:06:06 PM
He knows, since he's a Republican, that he'll never have to keep his word, or live up to his promises. Bummer.
Posted by: bradylemo | Oct 18, 2006 7:44:42 PM
I used to like McCain until it became apparent that he'd give anything to be President...even the truth.
He'd commit suicide if the Democrats win the senate? All the more reason to vote Democratic!
Posted by: Jim | Oct 18, 2006 7:53:04 PM
Glad to see McCain still has some integrity left.
Posted by: Jim in CA | Oct 18, 2006 8:24:50 PM
Mr McCain has a very good sense of humor that if you saw this comment in person you would understand that. It wouldn't be the end of the world if the Democrats win the Senate. Although the Dems probably will win the House, they probably won't win the Senate. I think McCain is a fine and decent person that would have the ability to work with both parties for the benefit of us all.
Posted by: mike | Oct 18, 2006 8:50:23 PM
What an insensitive comment. Suicide is a horrible problem, and no joke, it destroys families, communites and a person driven to suicide has not been able to find the help needed - maybe because of the cuts in mental health care pursued by the Bush administration - It is just another of McCain's recent comments that show he is no equiped to be a Presidential candidate or a distinguish senator. Shame on him
Posted by: Craig Urquhart | Oct 18, 2006 8:55:13 PM
Senator John McCabe of AZ just bowed out as a presidential contender.
There are far more Republican disasters of the Pres. Bush Administration that would justify his suicide.
His departure is one less Republican doubletalking the Americans about the Pres. Bush Administration.
We all can't wait until the "Republican Morality" is history in Nov.
Someone play taps, please.
Adam.

why elect congress & the senators they only sit an say nothing when everything in the bush administration go to hell get them all out of office an let the citizen have a new start with jobs bring our boys home jobs & our boys
Posted by: jettaasia | Oct 18, 2006 11:27:09 PM
Too bad he didn't express this kind of resolve when he had the chance to prevent his country from endorsing the use of torture.
McCain is the A-Rod of politicians. He always comes up small in the clutch, then makes a big statement at the exact moment he doesn't need to.
Posted by: GS | Oct 19, 2006 12:34:48 AM
I can't see the GOP losing the Senate,
So McCain need not do anything drastic. He will be around to be the next President of the US.

Why wait? Do it now.

Great!! One MORE reason to vote Democrat this year.
Yours truly, A FORMER republican
Posted by: dectra | Oct 19, 2006 7:27:16 AM
McCain is an idiot. He's becoming more and more like Bush everyday. Suicide that's horrible to say something like that. Goes to show you the mentality of the Republican party.
McCain will never be President.

The man is mad and so is bush, do you understand, Impeachment!
Don't worry about Killing yourself. Thats for when you won't be re-elected

Sen. McCain: name your poison!
Posted by: chuck | Oct 19, 2006 1:49:05 PM
Can't add to much to the insightful and often bitingly witty comments on J.Mc.
Only thing - such efforts seem a waste on a topic like McCain. Is he worth the energy?
Why am I wasting my own time?
Good bye, dear John!

dont do it alone, for crying out loud, take some with you.
Posted by: mike | Oct 19, 2006 3:45:41 PM
You people make me sick! You can all go rot for all I care.
Nah, I'm just kidding. You guys are alright.
Pardon me Mr. McCain, would you like to super-size that suicide?
(Vote Robot)
Posted by: Bender | Oct 19, 2006 6:57:01 PM
I really like McCain, but stupid remarks can change that. I understand he is desperate like so many others in his party because they are standing behind a political disaster of epic proportions that they can't distance themselves from. So no job, no power, no respect, no party. Rearranging chairs on a ship goin' down.......
Posted by: Stella | Oct 19, 2006 7:28:29 PM
McCain has sunk to the level of Bush. Us and them.
Together we stand, divided we fall.
McCain has moved to the "them" column. I choose us.
Posted by: d | Oct 19, 2006 9:14:47 PM
McCain is also the guy that said in 1998 that Chelsea Clinton was so ugly because she was the daughter of Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno. A real statesman of international stature.
Posted by: Bailey | Oct 19, 2006 9:54:16 PM
I knew all along that McCain never believes anything he says. Is this not the same Bush's lapdog that endorsed torture? How the world turns! This guy wouldn't be running his snort if the same kind of torture he voted for was meted out to him in his Vietnam prison.
Yes, like someone said, "Name your poison, dude."
Posted by: Rackish | Oct 20, 2006 1:18:14 AM
Cool.Go for it Johnny.
Posted by: geo | Oct 20, 2006 6:16:17 AM
Wow. What a stupid thing to say. He used to be one of those people I didnt always agree with, but always respected.
That respect is gone.
Its become dislike.

Just tell me when and where, and I'll be there yelling: "Jump! Jump! Jump!"
Posted by: Thomas Mc | Oct 20, 2006 1:27:39 PM
And this guy is supposed to be a moderate? The closer politicians get to running for President, the smaller they appear. Let me see if I get this, he can handle 5 years in a Vietcong prison, but the idea of compromise is enough to drive him to suicide? The "Straight Talk Express" just took a turn in the ditch.

Senator McCain,
Please don't the republicans who are the moral fiber of this america has done nothing but make us all look like pedofile they have done nothing for american middle class or any class for that matter, so stop short of diebold changing the numbers we must retire all these no good republicans. cmm

I have become rather obsessed with the foolish comment made by Sen. McCain. My husband died from suicide and to joke about it like McCain did brought back a lot of pain for me, as well as other suicide survivors, I'm sure. Take it back Senator!
Posted by: sharon | Oct 20, 2006 9:31:00 PM
I think McCain just committed suicide at least politically. When he runs in 2008 for president he is going to have a hard time explaining the so called humor in this statement.
Posted by: Dennis | Oct 20, 2006 10:49:15 PM
I'm sad to say it, but our last two elections went to someone who makes dumb comments like this.
Isn't McCain the same guy who called asians "g**ks"?
We'll have a calendar of his comments soon enough.
Posted by: espinosa | Oct 21, 2006 3:09:55 AM
Mccain is showing his true color party before country. He is against abortion but would commit suicide, that statement was not a joke. He is another whimp that can not stand up to Bush ha has forgotten the campaign where Bush and Rove smeared him. He was agaisnt torture but as usual Bush pushes and he caves in he would never be president of this country.
Posted by: HARRY | Oct 22, 2006 7:48:23 PM
This is a good example, joking or not. Individuals registering to run in an election should by law have a psycological evaluation in order to run.
Posted by: doc | Oct 22, 2006 9:07:24 PM
wow. i am a republican, and personally, i think he should be committed for that comment. if i had gone into the public and said something like that, i'd be in a nut house for the next few years being pumped full of sedattives and told to think happy thoughts about clouds and rainbows and flowers. that is a pretty damn stupid thing to say. I hate it when intelligent people do stupid things, and it seems that republicans have done quite a few in the last couple of months. Hmmm... maybe its all a set up by the libs. im gonna look into that.
Posted by: kevin | Oct 22, 2006 9:10:24 PM
i think that mr mccain has bee listening to a little too much emo music. tommorow hell probably be seen wearing long black pants, and a mettalica shirt, with peircings everywhere and long black spikes on his head. we shoud look at his wrists to make sure he isnt cutting himself
Posted by: kevin | Oct 22, 2006 9:13:33 PM
Remember when McCain actually stood for something. Then he had to go drink the Kool-Aid. "Straight Shooter Express" to "Failure Train".
Posted by: Pat Tillman | Oct 23, 2006 2:37:55 AM
wow- i am surprised at Sen McCain's stupid comment...and he was a Republican i actually thought was fairly bright!
as a mental health professional, i do think that remark needs to be addressed. an apology is in order for all those who have experienced the suicide of a loved one.
Posted by: pam | Oct 23, 2006 2:45:19 AM
I have seen McCain go from an honorable man to "I will do anything to be President" Even kiss Falwell's butt and he sure in hell has kissed Bush's especially after the dirty campaign Bush waged against him in South Carolina. Shame for wanting something so bad you would give up your principles.
Posted by: Barbara Adams Jackson | Oct 23, 2006 4:28:43 AM
I say have at it McCain there's nobody restricting you.
Posted by: Billy Gosa | Oct 23, 2006 11:23:56 AM
It's all because of Clinton screwed up that cause McCain to say such stupid words...
Anyway, since McCain is now a Bush supporter, he will have no recall saying it in Nov.
Posted by: Robert Wiseman | Oct 23, 2006 7:03:16 PM
I am so glad we get to hear these peoples comments, when their padded jobs are at risk. They have a tendency of showing their true character. Does he believe the American people should be happy with this party that has had control for 6 years with a do nothing congress, a lieing President and Vice President, no bills pass for the middle class only for Corporate Business, immigration a mess, our security not completly funded, foreign policy a joke, we are more hated now around the world than we have ever been. The war in Iraq, losing our soldiers everyday with no real plans to end this mess. So he wants to commit suicide if the people feel change is needed. It doesn't suprise me, show your true colors Mr. Mc Cain. I will be sure not to vote for you as President. Now that I believe you must think everthing is grand.
Posted by: Jo Kelly | Oct 23, 2006 8:04:37 PM
I cannot believe that somebody
that liberal is slamming the democratic party.
After all, Bush super buddy
Carl Rove"s smear campain made him
lose the primary in 2000

another captain that has sold out to be on the ship of fools, lets sink them come nov.7
Posted by: the torpedo | Oct 25, 2006 12:07:01 PM
Was this REALLY newsworthy? Was a statement made by John McCain that was obviously meant in jest really something to provide the basis for a headline?
There will be more talk of this comment than on anything substantive McCain might have said, positive or negative.
This kind of "sensationalistic" reporting is insulting to the intelligence of all of those who follow politics seriously, and is part of the civic "dumbing down" of our society, to where we can name who a politician slept with more easily than we can name their positions on major issues and overall philosophy.
Posted by: Cliff Suter | Oct 29, 2006 6:55:21 AM
Ok, maybe McCain's joke was not the best of taste, but seriously everyone on this posting that has said he should kill himself is no better. Grow up.

All I can say is "Jump, jump,jump...!!!"
Posted by: B. Carter | Nov 8, 2006 11:20:32 AM
OK John, I actually used to have some respect for you. But, I just checked out your voting record and except on the environment (which is spotty at best), it SUCKS, besides the fact that your nose is so far up Bush's patootie you can see what he had for lunch.
So please, do us all a favor and keep your promise or at least retire and find yourself a good nursing home because I seriously think you are going Ronnie Reagan on us!
Congratulations Dems - now let's impeach the bastards!
Posted by: Suzanne | Nov 9, 2006 7:35:59 PM
"If McCain was going to commit suicide he'd have already done it under the Bush Administration. Let's be thankful McCain only has a year to go in that environment... Wow! McCain must be STRESSED out. Yes, it's time for change, or time for the meds."
Posted by: Pointman | Dec 30, 2007 6:14:24 AM
