McCain In Iowa: "I'd Just Commit Suicide" If Democrats Take Control Of Senate

ABC News' David Chalian reports: While campaigning for Republicans in Iowa today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) jokingly said "I think I'd just commit suicide," when he was asked how he would react if the Democrats gained majority control of the United States Senate.

"The Republicans standing beside him burst into laughter," reports Radio Iowa's Kay Henderson.  "'I don't want to face that eventuality because I don't think it's going to happen. . . I think it's going to be tough, but I think we'll do o.k.'"

Winning the six seats necessary to gain control of the Senate has seemed like a long shot for Democrats for most of the year.  In the last week or so, many analysts seem to believe that if the national wind blows strong enough in a Democratic direction, it may not just be the House at risk for Republicans, but that the Senate may fall into Democratic hands as well.

Democrats are targeting seven states.  Their best pickup opportunities appear to be in Pennsylvania, Montana, Rhode Island, and Ohio.  If they can win two of the remaining three targets (Tennessee, Virginia, and Missouri) while holding onto their one vulnerable seat in New Jersey, they will be in the majority.  Though the chances of that happening are more likely today than they have been all year, it is still somewhat of a triple bank shot.

Can't add to much to the insightful and often bitingly witty comments on J.Mc.

Only thing - such efforts seem a waste on a topic like McCain. Is he worth the energy?

Why am I wasting my own time?

Good bye, dear John!

You people make me sick! You can all go rot for all I care.

Nah, I'm just kidding. You guys are alright.

Pardon me Mr. McCain, would you like to super-size that suicide?

(Vote Robot)

I really like McCain, but stupid remarks can change that. I understand he is desperate like so many others in his party because they are standing behind a political disaster of epic proportions that they can't distance themselves from. So no job, no power, no respect, no party. Rearranging chairs on a ship goin' down.......

McCain has sunk to the level of Bush. Us and them.

Together we stand, divided we fall.

McCain has moved to the "them" column. I choose us.

McCain is also the guy that said in 1998 that Chelsea Clinton was so ugly because she was the daughter of Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno. A real statesman of international stature.

I knew all along that McCain never believes anything he says. Is this not the same Bush's lapdog that endorsed torture? How the world turns! This guy wouldn't be running his snort if the same kind of torture he voted for was meted out to him in his Vietnam prison.

Yes, like someone said, "Name your poison, dude."

Cool.Go for it Johnny.

Wow. What a stupid thing to say. He used to be one of those people I didnt always agree with, but always respected.

That respect is gone.
Its become dislike.

Just tell me when and where, and I'll be there yelling: "Jump! Jump! Jump!"

And this guy is supposed to be a moderate? The closer politicians get to running for President, the smaller they appear. Let me see if I get this, he can handle 5 years in a Vietcong prison, but the idea of compromise is enough to drive him to suicide? The "Straight Talk Express" just took a turn in the ditch.

I have become rather obsessed with the foolish comment made by Sen. McCain. My husband died from suicide and to joke about it like McCain did brought back a lot of pain for me, as well as other suicide survivors, I'm sure. Take it back Senator!

I think McCain just committed suicide at least politically. When he runs in 2008 for president he is going to have a hard time explaining the so called humor in this statement.

I'm sad to say it, but our last two elections went to someone who makes dumb comments like this.

Isn't McCain the same guy who called asians "g**ks"?

We'll have a calendar of his comments soon enough.

Mccain is showing his true color party before country. He is against abortion but would commit suicide, that statement was not a joke. He is another whimp that can not stand up to Bush ha has forgotten the campaign where Bush and Rove smeared him. He was agaisnt torture but as usual Bush pushes and he caves in he would never be president of this country.

This is a good example, joking or not. Individuals registering to run in an election should by law have a psycological evaluation in order to run.

wow. i am a republican, and personally, i think he should be committed for that comment. if i had gone into the public and said something like that, i'd be in a nut house for the next few years being pumped full of sedattives and told to think happy thoughts about clouds and rainbows and flowers. that is a pretty damn stupid thing to say. I hate it when intelligent people do stupid things, and it seems that republicans have done quite a few in the last couple of months. Hmmm... maybe its all a set up by the libs. im gonna look into that.

i think that mr mccain has bee listening to a little too much emo music. tommorow hell probably be seen wearing long black pants, and a mettalica shirt, with peircings everywhere and long black spikes on his head. we shoud look at his wrists to make sure he isnt cutting himself

Remember when McCain actually stood for something. Then he had to go drink the Kool-Aid. "Straight Shooter Express" to "Failure Train".
