ABC's Karuna Seshasai reports: State Rep. Joe Negron will replace Rep. Mark Foley as the Florida GOP's nominee in the 16th congressional district.  Rep. Foley's name will still appear on Florida's ballot but the votes cast for Foley will be accorded to Negron.

Florida GOP's Executive Board heard five-minute speeches from six Republicans; Joe Negron, Gayle Harrell, Tom Rooney, Mike Mett, Joe Arnold, and Marcus Flagg to determine who would become the party's nominee.  Negron arose as the winner with a unanimous vote from 32 voting members.

The Associated Press reports that in a statement before the announcement, Negron stated that, "Obviously I'd rather have my name on the ballot, but Mark Foley, that name is a placeholder - that's it.  He's withdrawn - not in Congress, not a congressman any more. This is going to be a race between Joe Negron and Tim Mahoney."

Already doubts have begun to emerge, foremost from former state Republican chairman Tom Slade, "I think it's a death sentence…mission impossible.  The only way you win is they (voters) have got to vote for Mark Foley.  That doesn't appear to me to be very attractive."

Current state party spokesman Jeff Sadosky is more optimistic, telling ABC News that with the right financial backing and enough "differentiation" from Foley the district remains very winnable.

And all the votes cast for the Mark Foley, the child predator, go to Negron...wow.

The fact that the GOP had to pick among six "contestants" tells it all. Who is this guy? I guess he will be whoever they want him to be. So far we know he is a good public speaker. Wow, that's important!
