Pelosi Dismisses Alcoholism, Abuse as Foley Excuses

ABC's Teddy Davis reports: House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) argued at Georgetown University today that the situation surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) isn't about "whether a law was broken, this is a question of the highest ethical standard."

Pelosi said the House Ethics Committee "has a responsibility to make judgments on the performance of the leadership or anyone who has a responsibility here."

Pelosi, who is often maligned by her opponents as the type of San Francisco liberal prone to explaining away wrong behavior, said today that there is "no excuse" for what Foley did: "Not alcoholism, not any childhood history."

"In fact a childhood history should speak to being more protective of children than less protective," she added.

Ms. Pelosi, please leave the psychiatry theories to the experts please...

The question is: what did you and the other democratic leaders know and how long did you let it sit while other 18-yr-old adults were being contacted???

This will not result in the way that it was intended I am quite certain. It just needs another week or so to play out.

I dont quite understand why republicans and their apologists are suggesting that this is a democrat october suprise. ABC has said repeatedly that the person who gave them the information that led to the uproar was a republican.
the Hill newspaper went as far as to say the person showed them their voting history to prove it. You are really going to have to try harder. As far as "not resulting the way it was intended" whatever that means, clearly the only intention originally was to get Foley to stop stalking a 16 year old. It seems that, at least, has worked. Thank god.

Stop trying to pass the buck! I highly doubt that this will prove to a "Dem. dirty trick". Even if it does, the Rep. leadership had ample opportunity to deal with the issue and chose not to. The more spin the electorate has to put up with, the more dire the consequences come November!

She right about the Alcoholism and Abuse Excuse! Why is rehab the first place every A-hole runs? Mel Gibson? Foley? Drunks drink and can't stop! They don't drink and end up in bed or on-line with kids. And as far as the Abuse, he says he was "Abused" as a child. Why is this the first we have heard about it? Wouldn't you think he would have said something when he was trying to pass his child protection bill? Also because he was "abused" that mean he get a free pass to continue the cycle? Give me a Break!!

Ms. Pelosi didn't have any trouble endorsing the late "great" Harry Hay during the SF GLT ect..Parade. She march next to him. Harry Hay was an ardent advocate of older men having sex with young boys. When is Brian Ross going to investigate this connection and the obvious hypocricy of Ms. Pelosi and her fellow Democrats when it comes to "protecting" the children. Or does ABC only investigate Republicans, Christians, Conservatives. I am still waiting for a critical examination of the Koran in light of their critical examination of the Bible. Where is the courage or integrity of ABC? Or is it only about the money?

You know, if a teacher was caught sending these kinds of graphic emails and IMs, and it turned out the principal of the school knew about it, is there any rational person out there who would not immediately demand for that principal to resign?

Pelosi's right, this is a profound ethical and moral scandal (not to mention illegality involved, according to federal law signed by Bush this year). Republicans have controlled Congress since '93, Bush is in his second term, and people are actually crazy enough to try and spin this into a Democratic problem? Priceless!

Yes, please let this play out another week. Or two! Hastert, Boehner and Reynolds are busy finger-pointing at each other, who's next? Alexander? Shimkus? At least Kirkland had the moral rectitude to admit to his share of the coverup. Guess the Republican party ain't all corrupt after all.

Hey, people! Stop of a sec! Take a real look at who is involved in this scandal and who isn't. Namely not one single woman is up to her eyeballs in this! And as for who is involved, look, ma! Its a circular firing squad!

I find it interesting that everyone wants to point fingers at everyone else in this entire situation. What we have to remember is that a person's life has now been destroyed by quite a few stupid decisions. Do we know who knew about this no, will anyone readily admit to it. Of course not, but keep in mind wether you are a Righty or a Lefty, the concern should be the individuals affected by this.
I will say this to the Liberals/Democrats, those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. I remember when a a man named Studds in 1983 who actually had sex with an underage page and when he was censured for doing so recieved 3 standing ovations, and not only that your beloved Pelosi nominated him several times to chair a commitee. Apples and oranges I say, what Foley did was wrong, he resigned, he is gone who ever knew about it, Republican or Democrat, it will be found out after the elections, so can we keep our eye focused on the real issues at hand, and not the issues given by the "drive-by media"
