Romney Predicts Democratic Majority In Statehouses
October 17, 2006 8:59 PM
ABC News' David Chalian reports: As we have written before, nearly all of the attention paid to the 2006 midterm elections is on the battles for control of the House and Senate.
There are 36 gubernatorial races this year and unless Arnold Schwarzenegger implodes (special effects style, of course) in the final three weeks of the campaign, we can't imagine many of these will get national attention.
The Republican Governors Association chairman -- 2008 White House hopeful Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) -- said today he believes the "House and the Senate look a little better" for the Republican Party than the governors races. "So the question is, will we lose six or eight governorships or even more? But we'll probably lose quite a few," said Romney on CNN.
"We'll certainly lose the lead," added Romney. When asked if there will be a majority of Democratic governors when the dust settles on election night, Romney responded, "Oh sure. Oh sure. I don't think there's anyone who has looked at the poll numbers who doesn't think that will happen."
There are currently 28 Republican governors and 22 Democratic governors.
Here is a look at the landscape of the gubernatorial contests this year: LINK

This and your background article are excellent and incisive, David! Perhaps sometime soon before the election, you can persuade your bosses at ABC News that this "trend" should be examined on one of the news programs, especially in the light of how it might affect legislation nationally.
