A Milkshake Break On the Hill
November 15, 2006 6:13 PM
ABCNews' Luis Martinez reports: It's been a long day of hearings in both the Senate and the House for General John Abizaid, the top American commander in the Middle East, and Ambassador David Satterfield, Chief Deputy of the Baghdad Embassy -- with no time for lunch in between.
When it came his turn to ask a question at the afternoon House hearing, Rep. Vic Snyder (D-AR) asked Genl. Abizaid if he'd had lunch. The General replied,"No."
Snyder said it was too bad they didn't even have a chance for a milkshake. "They have good ones here, you know," Snyder said.
The hearing continued on. At a little after 4 pm, Snyder quietly sat next to Satterfield and Abizaid as they testified. He held in his hands two chocolate milkshakes.
When they were done answering a question, he placed the milkshakes in front of the witnesses, to laughter from the hearing room.
Flummoxed, the witnesses sheepishly accepted Snyder's gift and put in their straws. Genl. Abizaid said, "This is the first time this has happened to me."
There were more laughs when Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) told the next questioner, Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) that Abizaid would appreciate a really long question so that he might have time to finish his shake. To which she gleefully said "I didn't get any lunch either."
