ABC News' Mark Halperin Reports: Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) does not intend to run for president in 2008 and issued a paper statement from his office this morning.

In his statement Frist said:

“Twelve years ago, I pledged to the people of Tennessee that I would serve two terms in the Senate – to serve as a true citizen legislator – and then return home.  I said I’d  come to the Senate with 20 years experience in healing, spend 12 years serving in Washington, then go right back to Tennessee to live where I grew up.  I’ve never deviated from that commitment.  And I will do just that.

“In the Bible, God tells us for everything there is a season, and for me, for now, this season of being an elected official has come to a close.  I do not intend to run for president in 2008.

“Karyn and I will take a sabbatical from public life. At this point a return to private life will allow me to return to my professional roots as a healer and to refocus my creative energies on innovative solutions to seemingly insurmountable challenges Americans face.

Sources close to Frist say he does not expect to do anything on camera till next week.

The most significant fallout may be now-available GOP money in Tennessee -- where there is lots of it -- for other GOP presidential hopefuls.

I am very pleased that someone has a greater calling, that of being a doctor, than being the "it guy" for the Republican's in 2008. And that was a strong pull and I am sure his party puts a lot of pressure on its selected few. My opinion of Bill Frist just went up about 1000%. Great decision, Dr. Frist. Tennessee will welcome you with open arms.

Good riddance to Bill.

This citizen will not miss his grandstanding, nor his diagnosis by-video skills.

Now go spend some of that money your rolling around in, Bill. Perhaps you can heal the U.S. economy single-handed.

I guess he read the polls that suggest he is as 'popular' as other great leaders like Bush, Cheney, and Hussein.

I understand his decision but I sure would have voted for him.

I would have to question any patient that would go to a doctor who hasn't practiced in 12 years. A lot has changed in medicine in that time.

I think you will find that most of the high profile republicans will bail out of the presidential race. They have too much baggage to have a chance at president in 2008.

Our hats are off to you, Mr. Frist, for the job well done. You have the training, the experience and would make a great President. I would be happy to vote for you, but if you feel your calling is back to medicine, may God bless you in that.

Sen. Frist couldn't win, since he doesn't even have the support of the Republican base after having moved the Amnesty Bill for Illegal Aliens through the Senate
