Bush on Vietnam: "History Has a Long March to It"

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: President Bush was only in Vietnam for a few hours today before he was asked about the war here over three decades ago and the comparisons to the war in Iraq today.

"We'll succeed unless we quit," Bush said of Iraq. He stressed that the war there is part of a greater struggle and it will be long.

"[T]the task in Iraq is going to take a while. I would make it beyond just Iraq. I think the great struggle we're going to have is between radicals and extremists and people who want to live in peace. And that Iraq is part of the struggle," Bush said. "It’s going to take a long time for the ideology that is hopeful and that is an ideology of freedom to overcome an ideology of hate. The world that we live in today is one where they want things to happen immediately. Its hard work in Iraq."

Bush was asked about his impressions of being in Vietnam: "[H]istory has a long march to it. And that societies changed and relationships can constantly be altered for good," he said.

The President said one of the most poignant moments for him and the First Lady on their drive into Hanoi was passing by Truc Bach Lake, where Sen. John McCain’s plane was shot down in 1967.

"He's a friend of ours, he suffered a lot as a result of his imprisonment and yet we passed the place where he was literally saved in one way by the people pulling him out," Bush said.

Bush is trying to compare Iraq to vietnam??? That is insulting to the historical knowledge of Americans.
But Bush wouldn't know any better.
That comparison is like Apples to peanuts. The only thing those two countries have in common is they were both embarrassing disasters for us we had no business getting into. Iraq and Vietnam have very different religions, goverments, languages,culture,location,allies....etc. Read between the lines America, Bush is saying "Stay the course".

What is really silly is that this "long march of history" theory is Marxist/socialist in origin. Most Americans probably aren't picking up on that, but I'm sure the Communists are laughing their behinds off. We ultimately won in Vietnam? Oh yes, that is why they have Ho Chi Minh city. Maybe in 40 years President Jenna can visit al-Sadr City (formerly Baghdad)and declare victory.

Bush is in no position to talk about Vietnam. He went AWOL.
How dare he step on Vietnam soil and marr the name of our dead US soldiers.

Chicken hawks all.

Yes, And John McCain is his "friend." The kind of friend that you make racial slurs about their children.

The Communist Chinese will also be amused and proud of Bush's comments, where the "Long March" has a very important meaning, referring to the retreat begun in 1934 that saved the Communist army, a tale that has developed its own legendary revolutionary status.

Is Bush sending some kind of crazy message to the Iraqi insurgents? Just wait it out? The guy is a Moron in Chief.

PThe French and Americans got involved in Vietnam and try to make Vietnam adapt to the Western ideology and Christianize Vietnam with the beliefs that they were doing a lot of good for Vietnam. Just like a mother trying to do the best for her child. The change must be a gradual change and it depends on whether the child is willing to adapt, how much it will accept at what rate. Please don't force things down on people 's throat too quickly too soon or the people will choke. It is wrong to go to war just to force your own values on other people and make people accept the facts that you are right after all. A guest who come to a house must first respect that house 's rule; Otherwise stay in a corner to practice their own rules or simply get out. That is the best solution.

If people are not willing and not ready or capable of changing their attitudes then no matter how hard a person try, all attempts will be fruitless. There must be other ways to show a person that he/she is blind and cannot see certain things in life. There are better and softer ways. Also it must take time and patient. When one makes a mistake, it is better to admit, forgive oneself and go on. Try not to repeat the same mistakes again. Wars do not resolve anything. Only makes people more upset and blame those who engage and participating in wars.

It is really rude in my opinions to call your president by the first name and very rude attitude. When asked a favor of someone or somebody it must be of a very polite nature. This will make the conversation and the world a safer place. This world has no place for rude, crude and impolite people.
