Cheney on Kerry:"Aren't We Lucky He Lost That Election?"

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports Jumping into the fray on Day 2, Vice President Cheney will take aim at John Kerry today over his remarks on the military and Iraq.

In remarks in Montana scheduled for 7pm ET, Cheney will ask: "Aren't we lucky he lost that election?" of course, referring to the 2004 presidential election.

Cheney will go back to an oldie but goodie for the Bush-Cheney ’04 team and reference Kerry’s infamous line from 2004 that he voted for the war in Iraq before he voted against it.

"You remember John Kerry – the senator who voted for the 87 billion dollars before he voted against it … the guy that was always lecturing us about 'nuances,'" Cheney will say. "Of course, now Senator Kerry says he was just making a joke, and he botched it up. I guess we didn’t get the nuance. He was for the joke before he was against it."

Excerpts from the Vice President's remarks in Montana this evening:

Time and time again, we're seeing examples of Democratic Party leaders apparently having lost their perspective concerning the nature of the enemy we face, and the need to wage this fight aggressively.  No sharper example can be found than the Democratic Party chairman himself, Howard Dean, who said the capture of Saddam Hussein didn't make America any safer.  And maybe it should be no surprise that such a party would turn its back on a man like Senator Joe Lieberman, who has been an unapologetic supporter of the fight against terror.

Instead they highlight people like John Kerry, their presidential nominee in 2004.  Aren't we lucky he lost that election?  You remember John Kerry – the senator who voted for the 87 billion dollars before he voted against it … the guy that was always lecturing us about "nuances."  He's the one, you'll recall, who last year said that American soldiers were "terrorizing … children" in Iraq.  And just this week he took another swipe at the U. S. military.  Here's what he said, word for word.  Quote: "You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well.  If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq."  End quote.  Well, apparently Senator Kerry's the one who needs to be educated.

Of course, now Senator Kerry says he was just making a joke, and he botched it up.  I guess we didn’t get the nuance.  He was for the joke before he was against it.

As a leading Democratic senator, John Kerry needs to learn that the men and women serving in Iraq aren't there because they didn't study hard or do their homework.  The all-volunteer force represents the very best of this country.  They're smart, patriotic, exceptionally well trained, and dedicated to their mission.  They are heroes, and they are the pride of the United States of America.

If President Bush is so anti stem cell research, his quote "taking one life to save another" What is this war about? Aren't young troops dying to save life's? War is Not the Answer!!!!!!!

The Republicans act as though their policies are a good thing. Make college unaffordable and unattainable for many smart young rural and urban kids...close off all good opportunities...leave them no option but to join the military in an attempt to claw their way out of poverty and dead ends...send them to Iraq and have them come home in a wheelchair or a body bag...wrap it all in patriotism...and win the election. What's wrong with that picture? Ah, well, the Vice President...by virtue of his voluntary military service during the Vietnam War, certainly deserves the right to speak...as long as no one disagrees with him (in which case Guantanamo is always waiting).

No, we are decidedly not lucky that Kerry lost that election...
I find Kerry to be a thoughtful and insightful man with not only the courage of his convictions, but the forsight and intelligence to change his stance. Its been a theme churned out by the republicans that to change ones mind is a bad thing. Can you please explain why this is so bad? If you one day rubber stamp something... time goes by, things change, time and emotions and concepts change, you hit upon a different and perhaps better solution for a problem... you change your mind.
I would say to be obstinate and intractable are much less desirable traits in a "leader" - to serve not other purpose than to prove "I am staying the course" - yeah, right... the course of destruction of the image of the USA, of the plight of the less fortunate of the citizens, of the enrichment of the already rich, of the marriage of church and state... etc., etc., etc..... And all for oil - for pete's sake.

Yes, Mr Cheney you are lucky you won the election! Because if you didn't you would be on trial for war crimes, corruption and theft for billions of tax payers dollars that have gone to Halliburton and have nothing to show for it. I think you owe Mr.Kerry your life for losing that one.

Aren't we glad no one has assassinated Bush? If that were to happen, Cheney would be President. OhmyGooooood!!!!

Next Cheney is going to declare Kerry an "enemy combatant" and take him off to a secret prison to be tortured.

The Bush adminstration is not responsible for the increasing tuition.

If Kerry had won the election here is what life would be like:
2004 Leave Iraq
2005 Go back to Iraq
2006 Leave Iraq
2007 Go back to Iraq
flip flop flip flop

No. Mr. Cheney we are not lucky he lost. We might not now be "Stuck in Iraq" and having the PM in Sadr City giving the US Army orders.
I also agree with the first four comments posted on this blog.

I feel John Kerry made a mistake with his comment. It was just a poor choice of words, He served our country in time of war and I am sure that he did not in any way mean to talk ill about the brave men and woman serving our country. His words were for the man in the white house that never served in a war zone and with his misguided leadership has placed our troops and our country in harms way. Enought said, lets get to the election next Tuesday and make a total change in the leadership in Washington so I can again fly our flag.

"2004 Leave Iraq
2005 Go back to Iraq
2006 Leave Iraq
2007 Go back to Iraq
flip flop flip flop"

This is exactly what our beloved president has been doing to our military.

Bring'em back
Send'em back
Bring'em back
Send'em back

Flip flop flip flop....

We are stuck in Iraq because Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney think they can daydream us out of this mess, they think the mission was accomplished and that the remaining insurgency is on its last throes – boy will they be surprised when they wake up to the reality of the staggering amount of lives lost ,wounded troops and innocent civilians. What will they say to the loved ones who will one day ask them; was this war necessary? Was Iraq involved in the attack of our country? Were they such a threat to us that my mommy and my daddy or my sister or my brother had to die? Was that the case Mr. President?
I wonder; when will they apologize to our troops and their families for their disastrous leadership or will they just put the blame on something else, you know – it’s the CIA or the FBI or anybody’s fault except theirs. How many more thousands of our troops do we allow them to sacrifice over the next 2 years because of their mistakes? How long will they be in denial or when will this country decide it’s time to wake them up?

If we continue to allow our freedoms to be eroded, GWB will accomplish something no foreign terrorist could manage - the destruction of America

Correction Stephanie: There is NO Iraqi government. It's a joke and a pawn of the Bush administration. Bush's war has brought out AND created the worst in terror regimes and thugs in centuries. Bush's war has probably killed more Iraqi citizens ( I will not mention our troops'deaths which have disgracefully surpassed 9/11 and that is a sin worse then righteous Christian's views of stem cell research) then Sadam ever did.

We are lucky Bush is alive, the last thing this country needs ,is a NUTCASE IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Mr Cheney has limited credibility .Mr Cheney no longer has the respect of mainstream America due to his lack of integrity. This man is not a leader.

I don't often read this stuff but I wanted to get a snapshot of how people felt about the Kerry faux pas and apology.

Generally, I am just saddened at the vitriolic tone of most of the statements. It is reflective of an America divided, corrupted and lacking a sense of cohesion. A just war often brings nations together in common cause. An unjust war does the opposite.

I hope the next President and the next Congress can repair the damage to the pysche and to the conscience of the nation.

Does anyone really listen to this madman anymore? Defferment Cheney because quote" I had better things to do than to go to Viet Nam" unquote. He and his lovely wife, "oh no not really" when asked if her book was about Lesbian love. I guess that's not the reason Cheney hired a slew of attorneys to stop a reissue of this lovely little child's book.

These people have made lying a science. And also what about the shredding truck that pulled up to his home when "an activist judge I guess" has now issued a notice that all visitors to his home and office be revealed.

Oh Dicky Boy, just Shut Up!

In ans to: I hope the next President and the next Congress can repair the damage to the pysche and to the conscience of the nation.
...They will have to go back a good # of years...Our President Bush started repairing the damage;
Hope the next one is half the man he is and will continue to repair the damage....
