Hoyer Prevails Despite Pelosi's Push for Murtha
November 16, 2006 12:34 PM
ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) was decisively elected as the House Majority Leader today by the House Democratic Caucus, despite Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi’s endorsement of longtime ally Rep. John Murtha (D-PA).
The House Democratic Caucus choose Hoyer by a vote of 149 to 86 despite a speech this morning by Pelosi encouraging her fellow Democrats to choose Murtha, who lead the charge in Congress for a U.S. troop withdraw from Iraq.
Pelosi's preference of Murtha over Hoyer -- first made public in a letter to fellow Democrats Sunday -- caused friction in the Democratic caucus with some Democrats questioning Murtha’s ethics record.
Pelosi defeated Hoyer in 2001 for the position of minority whip and Hoyer has been one-step behind Pelosi in the Democratic leadership line since.

The media made WAY to much of this fight. ALL parties have these internal struggles. The Democrats have voted and now, with Hoyer, we
move forward. Democracy within the party works and should be an example to all of America and the world. Democrats are strong and united, ready to lead America in a bold new direction!

I think it's a historic day for women in America! Congratulations to Speaker Nancy pelosi! Democratic women stand proudly behind Speaker Pelosi!

Rep. Hoyer will offer a bit of intelligence to this mix in Washington! Mr. Murtha is clearly out in "left field" in his thinking. Although he is a veteran, he is clearly not in support of our American Troops! A bit of jealousy can be detected behind his madness!
