McCain Strategist: 'We're Too Disciplined to Respond" to Romney 'Disingenuous' Charge
November 21, 2006 6:16 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: In an interview with Bill Sammon in today's Washington Examiner, Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) called Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) "disingenuous" and accused him of pretending to "have it both ways" for telling ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that he personally believes that same-sex marriage should not be legal while also thinking that the issue of same-sex marriage should be decided by the states.
"Look, if somebody says they're in favor of gay marriage, I respect that view. If someone says -- like I do -- that I oppose same-sex marriage, I respect that view," Romney told the Examiner. "But those who try and pretend to have it both ways, I find it to be disingenuous."
Asked about Romney’s comments to the Examiner, McCain strategist John Weaver told ABC News, "We're too disciplined to respond."
To establish himself as the "true" conservative in the nascent presidential field, Romney has started to point to his differences with the Arizona Senator on immigration, campaign finance regulation, and the interrogation of terror suspects.
Romney, who supports a federal marriage amendment, is also trying to draw a distinction with McCain on the issue of same-sex marriage. While Romney's position flies in the face of traditional principles of federalism, one Republican media strategist thinks that it will appeal to the GOP's base.
"Theoretically, it would be best for the states to handle it," said Keith Appell, a Republican media strategist and vice president at Creative Response Concepts. He added, however, that "the overwhelming consensus" among grassroots conservatives is that "you need a federal marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution because a particular state’s Supreme Court can legalize same-sex marriage without a residency requirement which creates legal chaos from coast to coast."
"The position that is going to appeal to the conservative grassroots," said Appell, "is one that effectively knocks back the rulings of activist judges who are imposing the homosexual agenda from the bench."

Mitt Romney is a Mormon.
Romney is a member of a Religious sect, some have even called it a cult, that has historically supported polygamy and Under age arranged marriages and still does.
A Mormon leader is on trial right now for it.
Is this the person that the Republicans want talking about "Family values, and a moral sexual agenda". I think NOT. If ones religious values shapes ones moral compass, one must seriously question Romney's moral compass. Don't be fooled by Romney's "Gay bashing" talk, his religion sais Polygamy and child marriage is morally acceptable. Romney is morally UNacceptable as a president.

As a conservative who is against gay marriage, I believe Romney's people should be a little more creative in attempting to draw a distinction between their candidate and the others. Gay marriage is a none issue. Any party that seriously supports it will be sending themselves to the opposition for a generation.
I wish Romney would let me know what he is for, instead of trying define what Mr. McCain believes.

If the angel's name was Moroni, why are they called Mormons?

Ron needs to educate himself more on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), the largets Mormon congregation. The LDS Salt Lake based faith does not endorse polygamy or underaged marriage. These teachings are supported by breakoff sects who disagreed with the stoppage of polygamy. While Romney is a member of the LDS faith based in Salt Lake, the current "mormon" leader on trial for polygamy Ron refers to is a leader of a breakoff sect that has not been affiliated with Salt Lake church for years.
Romney's run for the presidenency should be based on any other candidate's credentials. Their willingness to support the party platform, their ability to raise money, and their connection to the American public. Later-day Saint or not, Romeny deserves the same opportunity President Kennedy got in his 1960 presidential campaign.

Duane,
By your definition, Christianity would be a "Break off sect" of
judaism. Yet I hear it almost universally called "Judeo-Christianity". Christianity, which claims to be a new religion, follows the life and teachings of a Jewish Rabbi. Christianity follows Jewish writings, practices Jewish rituals...etc. Saying those LDS/Mormon groups are seperate is like saying christianity and judaism are separate. Christians respect Jews and defend Isreal. Christians are very careful not to say anything that would be Anti-semitic (Arabs are semitic too), LDS/Mormon is the same way I suspect. I'm not anti-Mormon, I just think the American people need to know the moral background of anyone they might be electing. BTW, shouldn't supporting America come before supporting a party platform?

Mitt Romney is nothing more than a grandstander. He is a user of people. I have no respect for him at all. He is suppose to be a governor but for the last 2 years he has been MIA; AWOL.

Ron,
I appreciate your response, but you still need to consider the following. You questioned Romney’s moral compass because of his religious beliefs. In your initial comments you stated “If ones religious values shapes ones moral compass, one must seriously question Romney's moral compass… his religion sais Polygamy and child marriage is morally acceptable.” While polygamy is an undeniable fact of LDS history, it or the issue of child marriage is not acceptable for those who belong to the Salt Lake based LDS Church. Hence, I believe your statement “his religion sais Polygamy and child marriage is morally acceptable” is incorrect. I agree with the comment in your response that “the American people need to know the moral background of anyone they might be electing.” Do you have evidence that Romney himself is a practicing polygamist or is married to a minor? Evaluating Romney on merits other then his own would be incorrect.

Ron,
If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend that your read Jon Krakauer's excellent Under The Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. Having had several friends from SLC and worked with Saints, the modern LDS church is indeed quite opposed to the polygamist sects and FLDS confederacy (they are really multiple sects, with some supporting each other and others very distinct and seperate). Romney will have to be judged based on his words and actions (not as a Mormon), the same as each Christian that runs for the office.

Mitt Romney is a homophobic grandstander who will never win the nomination never mind the presidency. I am so sick of his political tactics & would never vote for him or another republican as long as I live.
