Pelosi Refuses to Endorse Rangel's Draft Plan

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports:  When Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and incoming Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) emerged from their morning meeting to present a unified face of the House Democratic leadership, they were quickly pelted with questions about Rep. Charlie Rangel's (D-NY) weekend comments that he intends to introduce a resolution aimed at reinstating the draft for the armed forces.

Pelosi refused to support Rangel's position, but said that reinstituting the draft is Rangel's long held position and that it is a position more about "shared sacrifice" than the draft itself.  Pelosi said that this was Rep. Rangel's way of making that point about the war.

When asked if she would allow Rangel floor time in January to woo his colleagues to his position, Pelosi punted and said that Rep. Rangel is going to be very busy chairing the House Ways and Means Committee.

On Sunday morning television, Rangel said "there's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft."

Calm down everyone.
Rangel does not want a draft.
He want's a debate about a draft.
I think if we are going to "Go big"
we may well need one. The democrats are finally setting and framing the debates in this country. Thats all this is. We the American people can not talk about options in Iraq and not talk about a draft. Debate is patriotic!

True, debate is one of the things that makes our country great. But to actually consider the draft a possibilty is ludicrous. We cannot send our own American citizens into a war that never should have started. The draft should only be used when our country is in danger and threatened directly. Since niether are true it should not be considered. The American people should find a much more relevant topic to talk about that does not involve needlessly risking the lives of thousands of Americans. This issue probably touches me more personally than others since I am 18 years old going on 19 and I would be a very likely canidate for the draft. Correct debate is patriotic but this topic is not.

Of course, nobody wants a draft, but Rangel did have a very good point when he said that the majority of the armed services recruiting is done in rural areas and lower income cities. He wants recruiting to be fair. Why should the blue bloods escape services when it is their own parents instigating the war? How many of those supporting the war would want their children to be in Iraq?

NM, the answer to your question is as I have pointed out before. In this great country, one has the right to pull him- her-self up from the bottom and to enjoy the fruits of capitalism and democracy.

If you were a fat cat with a 7-digit bank account, can you honestly tell me that you wouldn't pay to keep your children from going to Iraq?

You have many tools at your disposal to fix this "problem", one of which would be to review Mr. Rangel's position.

I was proud to serve and I'm proud that my husband still serves in the army. No I do not WANT my husband to go to Iraq but the truth is it will happen. His unit, like may others have already been twice and will go again. Our troops are in Iraq and if we pull them out too soon the the "wrong" people will take over the country and bring the fighting home to America. I'm sure we can all agree that we do not want that to happen. The important thing now is how do we best take care of our troops and help Iraq. I think everyone should serve their country in one way or another. Why should a few pay the cost for everyone to enjoy our freedom. If you do not like your freedom enough to fight for it then go somewhere else where you will have less reasons to fight and no right to complain.

DRAFT RANGEL SLAVERY20061127

When the establishment really wants something, they are crafty
about who they have front for it.

A military hero, Eisenhower, makes peace in Korea

A solid anti-communist, Nixon, opens up trade with communist
China

Another solid anti-communist, Reagan, makes peace with Russia

Now, a black guy, Rangel, pushes for the draft, the deadliest
form of slavery.

There is always a story. Rangel, of course, has one.

You know and I know that no friends or relatives of powerful
people are going to be forced into exchanging small arms fire
with any enemy, nor being exposed to RPGs or IEDs.
