Clintons to Discuss U.S.-Israeli Policy Behind Closed Doors
December 07, 2006 7:08 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: How would Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) confront the turmoil in the Middle East?
About 80 high-ranking U.S. and Israeli officials and opinion leaders will get a glimpse into the New York Senator's thinking when she participates in a closed press discussion of "U.S. Strategies in the Middle East: What Works, What Doesn't?" this Sunday at noon (ET).
The panel discussion, featuring New York Times columnist Tom Friedman and moderated by former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk, is part of a three day forum on US and Israeli policy towards the Middle East sponsored by the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution.
Sen. Clinton will not be the only member of her family to discuss U.S.-Israeli policy behind closed doors this weekend.
On Saturday, former President Clinton and former Israeli Prime Minister Simon Peres will participate in an 8:00 pm ET discussion on "Is a New Middle East Still Possible?" which will be moderated by former ABC Newsman Ted Koppel.
The driving force behind the forum is Haim Saban -- a major Democratic Party donor who made his fortune on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The Clintons attended a Saban round-table in Israel last year which featured Secretary of State Rice and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Topics of this weekend's forum, which kicks off Friday and will take place at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC, will include: the impact of the midterm elections, the "rising challenge" posed by the "Iranian-Syrian-Hizballah alliance," the consequences of "failing governments in Lebanon, Iraq, and the Palestinian Authority," options for "dealing with the threat from Iran," energy independence, "democracies and the media in wartime," and "how Israel should deal with its neighbors."
Other participants, according to the Saban Center, include: former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, former Central Intelligence Director George Tenet, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, former World Bank President James Wolfensohn, and David Satterfield, Secretary’s Rice senior adviser on Iraq.
The goal of the forum, which operates under a not-for-attribution policy, is to promote candor and open dialogue.
