Huckabee Eyes "Higher Ground"
December 05, 2006 5:34 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) has long maintained that he won’t make a final decision about 2008 until after he leaves the governor's office on Jan. 9, but Huckabee strategist Bob Wickers told ABC News that the Arkansas governor's Dec. 16 fundraising gala and January book launch are "indicative of where things are headed."
Huckabee's forthcoming book -- "From Hope to Higher Ground: 12 Stops to Restoring America’s Greatness" -- promises to lay out his vision on immigration and the shifts in America's job market, the rising financial and personal costs of health care issues, the need for music and the arts as part of children’s core education, and the mishandling of taxes.
Huckabee lags behind Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) in fundraising and organization. He also has come under fire from anti-tax conservatives in Washington for his record in Razorback country.
But the Huckabee camp is hoping that the silver-tongued former president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention will connect with the GOP's socially conservative and economically pressed base enough to be able to surprise his better-funded rivals at the Ames Straw Poll which is scheduled for Aug. 11.
