Clinton Offers Bush a 'Suit of Armor'
January 25, 2007 1:08 PM
ABC News' Paul Fidalgo Reports: Speaking to the U.S. Conference of Mayors today, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., reaffirmed her commitment toward universal health care, and used a little self-deprecating humor to do it.
Addressing her concerns over President Bush's health care proposals in his State of the Union address this past Tuesday, the former first lady said, "I welcome his participation in the health care debate. I’m going to send him a suit of armor, because I know that anyone who puts their foot into the health care debate is going to need that!"
The audience of mayors from around the country knowingly laughed and applauded the remark, which made light of Clinton’s famously failed attempt to enact a universal health care coverage when her husband was president.
"There’s that old saying," Clinton quipped, "'good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgment,'" eliciting further sympathetic laughter.
Clinton then turned to the substance of President Bush's health-care proposals.
"The problem is, his proposal would be funded by taking money away from public hospitals and the heath care safety net," said Clinton, "That is the robbing of Peter to pay Paul that I don’t think makes sense. We shouldn’t be setting up these false choices."
