ABC News' Paul Fidalgo Reports: "A few more people here than my usual press. I can't imagine why!" quipped Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., upon noticing the overflow of reporters and cameras present for the post-Iraq trip press conference that he and Rep. John McHugh, R-N.Y., held on Capitol Hill this afternoon with Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., an all-but-announced presidential hopeful.

Many political observers were surprised on Dec. 16, 2006 when Bayh pulled the plug on his nascent presidential campaign a mere two weeks after filing papers to create a presidential exploratory committee with the Federal Election Commission.

When he got out of the race, Bayh explained his decision by alluding to the high-voltage competition he was up against, "The odds were always going to be very long for a relatively unknown candidate like myself, a little bit like David and Goliath, and whether there were too many Goliaths or whether I'm just not the right David...the odds were longer than I felt I could responsibly pursue."
