Harriet Miers Resigning as White House Counsel

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: White House spokesman Tony Fratto confirms that White House Counsel Harriet Miers has submitted her resignation to President Bush

Miers submitted her resignation today and the President reluctantly accepted it. Fratto says Miers meets with the President every day but that he was not sure if they had a specific meeting today on this topic.

In Oct. 2005, President Bush nominated Miers to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. On Oct. 27, 2005, she withdrew her nomination after much criticism from conservatives and said in a letter to the President that she was "concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and its staff and it is not in the best interest of the country."

Miers has not made clear what she is doing next. Fratto points out that Miers has been at the White House since the beginning of the Bush Administration in 2001 and goes back to President's days as governor of Texas.

Fratto said he doesn’t know the effective date yet (wires are reporting Jan. 31) but Tony Snow will address this at the top of the briefing.
