A Swift Kick for McCain
February 15, 2007 8:00 AM
ABC News' Jake Tapper Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has picked up an endorsement from the back yard of one of his chief rivals. McCain's presidential exploratory committee announced yesterday that former Massachusetts Acting Governor Jane Swift has decided to support the senator in the Republican primaries, eschewing her successor, former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass.
"Senator John McCain is a principled leader whose unwavering determination to improve the lives of Americans is admirable," said Gov. Swift in a statement released by McCain’s campaign. "I am confident that Senator McCain will lead this country the same way he has led his life, in a way we can all be proud of."
Gov. Swift will also advise the committee on education issues, and Sen. McCain trumpeted her advocacy on the subject, saying, "Governor Swift understands the importance of education, and her advice and counsel on this critical issue will be very important to us. I am very proud to have her support."
Swift was Massachusetts' Lieutenant Governor until 2001 when then-Gov. Argeo Paul Cellucci, R-Mass., was appointed to become the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, at which point Swift became Acting Governor.
Swift was the first governor to give birth while in office, and suffered very low poll numbers, causing her to withdraw from the 2002 gubernatorial primary to make way for Romney, the race's eventual winner.
