Romney to Release Television Ad
February 20, 2007 8:52 AM
ABC News' Mark Halperin Reports: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., will become the first presidential candidate to run a television ad in the key states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, and Michigan according to spokesman Kevin Madden.
There will be two versions of the ad, one :30 and a :60. The :60 spot describes the former Massachusetts governor as a "business legend" who "rescued the Olympics" and "turned around a Democratic state."
Kevin Madden refused to divulge any information about the size, scope, or duration of the ad buy.
The ad is shot in handheld digital video form, not the typical lush film style used in campaign spots. Madden says it is "capturing events and the candidate as it happens" adding "This is Mitt being Mitt on the campaign trail."
This ad is likely intended to raise Romney's identification and polling numbers nationally and in the battleground states, where Romney's standing has lagged behind his fundraising strength and media-anointed first-tier status among the Republican field, along with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y.
Script For "Unplugged" 60-Second Ad:
ANN ROMNEY: "Every place that Mitt has gone, he has solved problems that people said were nearly impossible."
ANNOUNCER: "Mitt Romney: Business legend – rescued the Olympics – the Republican Governor who turned around a Democratic state."
MITT ROMNEY: "I believe the American people are over-taxed, and the government is over-fed. I believe we're spending too much money, and that's got to stop.
"I believe our laws ought to be written by the people, and not by unelected judges.
"Look, these are critical times we face. We face attack from jihadists. We face tougher competition than we've ever known before, coming from Asia.
"We're spending too much money here. We're using too much oil here. Our schools are failing too many of our kids.
"This is not a time for more talk and dithering in Washington -- it's a time for action.
"I believe in the people of America. Free American people are the source of this land's great strength.
"I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message."

How about having Ron Paul in the presidential polls?

Yep - Now he's back home in Utah, getting more money and political advice from his mormon leaders.

Steve, if you think your comment is honestly true, you have alot to think about. Why would he need to 'seek advice from his mormon leaders'? You would probably also be interested to know that mormon leaders, along with many other faiths are invited to Washington DC to council with the leaders of this country. And the list of people who are policitally shrewd who are not Mormon but support Mitt Romney is incredible.

STEVE -
Totally inappropriate! Romney is NOT in Utah getting any advice from leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! And, the LDS Church is NOT giving any money to Romney - and has NEVER done so!

It's interesting that the Bushies now seem to be quietly supporting Romney, at least Jeb Bush for now. Hey John McCain, how does that knife feel in your back?

The other candidates are going to get intimidated by him if his name recognition goes up. He's more of a conservative than either McCain or Giuliani, and has a better record of success. He's out first in commercials, and with time maybe first in popularity.

Mitt Romney was born in Michigan. He did his college studies in Utah (as well as at Stanford, in California), but attended graduate school in Massachusetts (MBA and law degree from Harvard) and, except for a stint saving the 2002 Winter Olympics, has lived in Massachusetts ever since -- including four years as governor of the state. He lived in France almost as long as he lived in Utah, yet it would be silly to say that he's French.
So what's this nonsense about his being "back home in Utah"?
And what basis do you have to claim that he's getting political advice from the leaders of his church, let alone to accuse him of (illegally) getting money from them?
Was the intent simply to smear him?

Steve:
Your comment is without foundation and has no relevance to the article. Last time I checked accurate information Romney's home was Michigan and the LDS leadership expresses political neutrality.

Blah, blah, blah...same old \, same old. Nothing her sounds any different to any of the other ads one might expect to hear. Tired old refrains. I'm a conservative but nothing here leaves me wanting to know more.
As far as the Olympics goes: OK, his one unique angle but let's not seriusly pretend it's "success" was all the direct result of one man.

I think that unfounded comments such as Romney garnering political advise from church leaders is unfortunate. Secondly Governor Romney is not "home" in Utah, he is from Michigan and has lived in Massachussetts for nearly 30 years. Please, lets keep the comments and political debate grounded in reality.

Romney might not be getting funded by mormon leaders/church in utah, but how quickly you forget about the hush-hushed scandal at BYU that involved some of the poli-sci students forming (BYU sponsored) support groups publicly supporting or endorsing Romney.
Utah is roughly 50% mormon and is the most RED state in the union. Coincidence? I think not. Anti-abortion, anti-gun control and anti-gay marriage -- all direct correlations to mormon stances/politics.
I'm sure Mitt is a good guy. But is it any wonder why people are so apprehensive of mormonism? Magic underwear and the fact that people of color could not attain higher positions in the church until the mid-70's (a full 10 years behind the civil rights movement).
Not to mention that politically, Mitt will not get the endorsement of the evangelicals; they view mormonism as a "cult".
This will be an interesting process. But I don't think you'll see Mitt finish above the middle of the pack in the primary --

michael: "how quickly you forget about the hush-hushed scandal at BYU that involved some of the poli-sci students forming (BYU sponsored) support groups publicly supporting or endorsing Romney."
I forgot it so quickly that I don't believe it ever happened. Never heard of it. And I TEACH at BYU. (The "hushing up" must have been quick and total.) What I believe michael may have in mind is a case where a pair in the office of the dean of the Marriott School of Management at BYU (to which Romney has been a significant donor) improperly used university alumni rolls to solicit support for his candidacy -- an error for which they were publicly rebuked.
On another issue: Why is michael so concerned with Governor Romney's underwear? His interest in it strikes me as a bit odd.
