Dodd Laments Iraq "Mistake"

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: At a Democratic candidate forum in Carson City Nevada, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., claimed, "It was a mistake, in my view, to vote the way we did in that resolution," referring to his 2002 vote in favor of the resolution which led to war in Iraq. 

Dodd joined seven other 2008 hopefuls at the first forum of Democratic candidates sponsored by AFSCME.

Responding to a question by the forum's moderator, ABC's George Stephanopoulos, as to whether or not rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., should apologize for her vote, Dodd said he will allow the senator to answer that question for herself.   

Dodd called for the immediate removal of U.S. troops from the densely populated areas of Iraq and for the U.S. to look to a diplomatic solution to the conflict. 

"We need a surge in diplomacy, a surge in politics" to create stability in Iraq, Dodd said. 

The Senator, who has served in the Senate for 26 years, presented himself as an experienced politician who has dealt with many different domestic and foreign policy issues.

In a jab at President Bush, who had served less than two terms as governor of Texas before being elected to the White House, Dodd said,  "We've had six years of on the job training…that has to stop in America."

Dodd, who mentioned that he's both a first time presidential candidate and recent father, joked, "I'm probably the only candidate here that gets mail from AARP and diaper services," much to the delight of the crowd, whom he also invited to his presidential inauguration.

Senator Dodd has been a fundraising machine, raising $3 million in the last quarter of 2006 to add to his reported access to $5 million dollars for his '08 effort.  The Dodd campaign war chest is so far only matched by Sen. Clinton's.
