Edwards Plays the "Courage" Card

ABC News' Paul Fidalgo Reports: In a fundraising letter to supporters, the presidential campaign of former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., mocks what it calls "play-it-safe" campaigns, but stops short of naming Edwards' fellow top-tier rivals, Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince tells readers, "You and I know how play-it-safe campaign experts always tell candidates: stay vague; that way no one will disagree with you. Say 'end the war!' but don't say when. Say 'health care for all' but don't say how."

"Well," writes Prince, "John Edwards must have been absent the day they taught how to dodge and weave in candidate school -- because this is not that kind of campaign."

Prince points out his candidate's emphasis on specifics, and repeats a favorite theme of the campaign, saying "this campaign is not about calculation, it's about courage."

You can expect a torrent of fundraising appeals from candidates in both parties attempting to set themselves apart from the rest of their respective fields as we head into the final homestretch month for the all-important first quarter campaign cash haul.
