Jousting for the Palmetto State
February 22, 2007 2:54 PM
ABC News' Matthew Zavala Reports: Rep. Duncan Hunter's R-Calif., announced on Thursday plans to embark on a tour of every county in South Carolina, in an effort to outmanuever his 2008 Republican rivals in the fierce battle to win the key first-in-the-South presidential primary.
A spokesman for Hunter's campaign told ABC News that Hunter's tour is scheduled to begin March 3.
Hunter also announced the names of several business leaders and politicians who are backing him in his presidential bid.
On the same day Hunter was trying to stake his claim in the Palmetto State, former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., announced his South Carolina county chairs, saying "We are making great progress in building an impressive organization in South Carolina." The county chairs will be charged with creating the infrastructure for the campaign and lead the grassroots effort within the state.
Not to be outdone, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y., was in the South Carolina on Wednesday for a townhall meeting with first responders and Sen. John McCain visited earlier in the week.
