Obama Campaign Refutes LA Times Story
February 19, 2007 5:09 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Parker Reports: The presidential campaign office of Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., today refuted a Los Angeles Times story suggesting Senator Obama had enhanced his role as a community activist in his best-selling memoir, "Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance."
In the memoir, Sen. Obama talks about his role in assisting the people of Altgeld Gardens, a public housing development which suffered asbestos problems in the 1980s.
However, the LA Times story suggests activists who worked on the asbestos episode say Obama "did not play the singular role in the asbestos episode that he portrays."
The presidential campaign office of Senator Obama today refuted the LA Times story, releasing a statement.
"The implication is false, and the article is misleading," said Bill Burton, spokesperson for the Obama campaign. "At no point in the work does Obama take 'singular' credit for initiating and leading efforts on the Altgeld asbestos problem."
"Those who worked with him confirm that he preferred a background role in the matter, refusing to claim credit or even be in pictures taken of the community group," said Burton.
"However, despite the fact that he shunned a public role, Obama's work is clearly remembered by Altgeld residents . . . and others credit (him) with bringing the problem of asbestos in Chicago's public housing to light," said Burton.

Any educated person knows that one of the greatest ways to gain respect is to be humble and let others take the credit. We also know that it takes a good leader to motivate & get things going in the right direction.
The LA Times should stick to covering stories of Britney Spears hair fiasco.

Any person with a little sense should know that ONE person can't win a battle alone! It doesn't matter if he portrayed himself as a "singular" role player or not...I'm sure he played a major role.

I do not understand why this man macane says one thing and rhen in front of millions not only put down our country - but follow the lead of the democrats. Why cant we just do what we need to do and stop bashing everyone else.he has become a flip flopper justto get votes. - just as bad as the rest-promising everything and in the end giving even less.come to expect that from what we call our government, whatever happened to We the People -not just you the government?STOP FAKING IT AND DO SOMETHING BESIDES BLAME SIDES OR GET OUT OF IT.What we need is more honesty and less politics...

Who wrote this story? Who were the sources? Is the writer or source connected to any political candidate, party or group that has an interest in spreading disparaging rumors? Did the editors check and re-check the facts or is this another FOX type attack? I am not interested in reading it first in the Times. I am interested in reading the truth, not half truths told to make a point. Give us the facts and let us decide.

What a crock! What next are they gonna publish? That Barack Obama parted his hair on the OTHER side of his head today? What a haul this contender is going to have to tow in seeking the presidency, with the likes of the LA Times and other media digging to his core to try and come up with even the most nothing about him for the negative. Funny, I read his past, this information about him, and got nothing of the sorts out of what I read, how in the world then could the LA Times get it wrong? Because they wanted to! What's next?

This is another reason why we end up with people like George Bush in the white house, Need I say more.

"the la times has become nothing but a liberal rag"
The concept of the "liberal media" is a myth. Those in power do not want the newspapers to expose their corruption (as in Germany during the 30s).
