Richardson Considers Vilsack's Iraq Position
February 08, 2007 2:35 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., told ABC News Thursday that he will look into a proposal by one of his Democratic presidential rivals to cut off all funding for U.S. fighting in Iraq.
"Did he do that?" Richardson asked in response to a question about former Gov. Tom Vilsack, D-Iowa, urging Congress to immediately end all funding for U.S. fighting in Iraq.
"Let me get back to you on that," said Richardson. "I'll have to see."
Vilsack first outlined his proposal for Congress to end all U.S. fighting in Iraq through its power of the purse while speaking to Democratic Party leaders last week.
"Congress has the constitutional responsibility and a moral duty to cut off funding for the status quo," Vilsack said Feb. 3. "Not a cap -- an end. Not eventually -- immediately."
Richardson is currently on the record in favor of Congress revoking its authorization for the war, de-funding the additional U.S. troops that President Bush wants to send to Iraq, and withdrawing all U.S. troops from the war-torn country by the end of 2007.
Richardson also favors bringing the Sunni and Shia together in a national reconciliation conference and organizing a regional conference with all of Iraq’s neighbors, including Iran and Syria.
