Senators Spar over Iran and Syria
February 04, 2007 4:45 PM
ABC News' Lindsay Hamilton reports: The Sunday morning talk shows showcased the tense debate in the Senate over how to proceed in Iraq. One major point of contention: whether the United States should engage Iran and Syria.
On Fox News, recently elected Senator Jim Webb, D-Va, said, "The elephant in the bedroom is dealing with Iran and Syria… I think there are reasons for them to come to the table."
Sitting down with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on This Week, Senator Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., called for regional engagement, saying, "There is going to be no peace in Iraq, there will be no peace in the Middle East unless all the regional partners are brought in to a framework of a political agreement."
In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer Senator Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., concurred, "I think you need to sit down with Iran and Syria. I think you need to sit down with the Sunni nations."
But Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., disagreed in a Fox News interview. "This idea that our key to success in Iraq is through Syria and Iran is naïve… The one thing that unites Syria and Iran is that they don't want a democracy in Iraq because it's a threat to their dictatorships," he said.
ABC's Diane Sawyer will report live from Damascus, Syria for Good Morning America on Monday and Tuesday.
