Tancredo Takes On NFL Over Border Patrol Ad
February 15, 2007 6:08 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Parker Reports: Colorado Republican Representative Tom Tancredo, a presidential candidate known for his conservative position on immigration policy, today took on the National Football League over its refusal to run a recruitment ad for the U.S. Border Patrol during the Super Bowl.
Rep. Tancredo wrote a letter to the NFL Commissioner, reacting angrily to a statement made by NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello in today's Washington Times newspaper.
"The ad that the (Homeland Security) department submitted was specific to Border Patrol, and it mentioned terrorism. We were not comfortable with that." Aiello was quoted as saying. "The borders, the immigration debate is a very controversial issue, and we were sensitive to any perception we were injecting ourselves into that."
Rep. Tancredo fired back today in a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, arguing, "I think it is a mistake to assert that the basic existence and function of the Border Patrol is so controversial as to merit an outright rejection of its proposed advertisement."
"I don't expect the NFL to have an internal debate about the nuances of border security policy any more than I would expect the NFL to have an internal debate about the health detriments of trans-fats or beer consumption," Rep. Tancredo said in the letter.
The Colorado congressman said the NFL is ignoring that "an unknown number of Islamic individuals from countries with known al Qaeda connections have entered the United States using false Hispanic identities, speaking Spanish and hiding among the growing flood of illegal immigrants."
However, Rep. Tancredo suggested the league can "remedy this situation by guaranteeing the agency space in next year's program."

Good for Tancredo- The border is a mess- and the Border Patrol is doing it's best to control an enormous influx.
It seemes insane that the Military can advertise in their programs but not Boerder Patrol.

thank you to the NFL for not reminding me about terrorism during one of my favorite days of the year.
Tancredo is a blow hard - he'll say anything to get a headline.

what a joke this Tancredo character is.
will do anything for a vote from the trailer parks in colorado.
fearmongering got us into Iraq,
and lost the elections for the
Bush-itters.
The Border mess was caused by
U.S. Meddling in latin america, where the CIA destroyed emerging economies, and funded insurgencies.
or set up dictators with no
reguard for the future of the region.
it just reeks of hypocricy to
say its not ok for you to come here, but its ok for us to
go and destroy your well being,
just stay off the front porch.
hypocricy..............

Ben, the reason we have a border patrol so people in denial can have their "favorite" day of the year. You really need to visit ground zero those poor souls had a favorite day of the year probably alot of them liked the Super Bowl. It's not just about you Ben and you enjoying yourself.

Tancredo is one of only a few politicians with guts enough to take the correct stand on ILLegal (lawbreaking) aliens who are taking over our country without firing a shot.... No border, no order, no USA!! Keep it up, Tom!! JEL (KS)

"Islamic individuals"?
"countries with known al Qaeda connections"?
I'm guessing there's a pretty good reason that the number is "unknown."

What a shock. For once, the Bush fearmongers got turned down.

I for one would not want another commercial that deals with a controversial subject on a day in which we want to be entertained. The situation with individuals coming to the US will have to be seriously addressed, but not during the super bowl. Finally, if someone is willing to work hard, pay taxes, and stay out of trouble, why can't they come to the states?

I am all for LEGAL immagration,
Having no real border is just stupid. Cheap labor drives down wages for the working class.

Hey Racism sells...You can easily stir up a bunch of racists with simple acts like this one which will take Tancredo about ten minutes, but let the Right-wing know where he stands. It's not meant to accomplish anything real, just solidify his racist base. Too bad liberals and progressives are too individualistic for such simple tactics.

Good for Trnacredo. Illegal immigration is bad for everyone - the American workers who are undermined and the Mexican workers who are being victimized in Mexico and in the US. This is another Grapes of Rath and the politcally correct choose to look the other way.

Hey sports bettors - check out the odds on Congressman Paul getting the presidency. Started out at 200 to 1 and in just two weeks has dropped to 15 to 1. What's up with that stuff, eh?
