Warner Backs McCain for President
February 26, 2007 11:09 AM
ABC News' Paul Fidalgo Reports: Despite significant disagreements over the Iraq War, Sen. John Warner, R-Va., gave his endorsement Monday for the presidential bid of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
The two Senators have recently been at odds over the President's escalation of troop levels in Iraq, with McCain being a staunch supporter of the President's policy, and Warner, a former Navy Secretary and World War II veteran, authoring a bill opposing the surge. They have been allies more often than they have been adversaries, however, and Warner's endorsement gives McCain the backing of a well-respected institution of the Senate, the military, and Southern politics in general.
"America"s next President will be challenged by a range of diplomatic and security issues of unprecedented complexity largely due to growing, worldwide, terrorist threats. Senator McCain's long experience with, and understanding of, our military coupled with his proven, unquestioned courage and leadership, provide him with the essential qualifications for our next President," said Warner in a press statement released by McCain's exploratory committee. "America's prosperity and personal freedoms at home must be protected from threats beyond our shores. Security will be the primary issue in the forthcoming Presidential campaign. I consider it a privilege to join the McCain team."
Sens. Warner and McCain have joined forces in recent years in negotiations with President Bush over the issues of torture and the suspension of habeus corpus in the Military Commissions Act, as well as being members of the "Gang of 14" that prevented the implementation of the "nuclear option" by Republican Senators trying to curtail Democratic Senators' ability to filibuster judicial nominations.

I once worked for John Warner. He is a man of great integrity and grit. Too bad he never ran for President! McCain is a good man but the dumb party base won't nominate him.
