ABC's Jake Whitman Reports: Google Inc.'s YouTube has announced the beginning of a new voter initiative aimed at  helping political candidates showcase their videos on the popular Internet site.

The company says so far Republicans Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney, and Democrats Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama and Bill Richardson are on board to post videos from their campaigns.

Politicians haven't always had the best luck with YouTube.  Former Sen. George Allen, R-Va had trouble recovering from a video that showed him using the word "macaca" to address a man of Indian descent who was a campaign worker for his opponent.

This is just the latest sign that politicians are recognizing and embracing the power of the popular video-sharing site.

Jordan Hunter, YouTube's director of content partnerships, told the Associated Press, "This is such an important election coming up that we just wanted to make sure we did everything we could in terms of helping candidates get their messages out, but also helping voters start a dialogue with those candidates on issues that really hit home at them individually."
