Brownback on the Yellow Brick Road
March 02, 2007 2:58 PM
ABC News' Matthew Zavala Reports: Speaking to a friendly conservative crowd gathered for a Washington conference, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kans., placed himself firmly on the right side of the political spectrum -- bemoaning the tax code and eschewing abortion rights -- drawing loud cheers and applause from the receptive audience.
Brownback held two volumes of the tax code with disdain and called for a flat tax, before endorsing the need for energy independence, overturning Roe vs. Wade, and outlawing gay marriage.
The heart of Brownback's pitch and perhaps his campaign was abortion. The Kansas Senator took a strong stance, calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
"I believe President Bush planted two tall oaks in Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito," Brownback declared, before saying, "We are only one vote short of overturning Roe vs. Wade."
Brownback discussed adopting his Chinese daughter to illustrate his pro-life perspective, saying that his daughter's biological mother in China fought for her and gave her a chance at life.
Attempting to interject humor into his speech like the others before him had done, the Senator encouraged the use of cellulosic ethanol saying, "We need to go from gas to grass and no I'm not speaking of marijuana," drawing chuckles from the crowd.
Brownback called for bipartisanship between Republicans and Democrats, particularly on health care issues such as finding a cancer cure within the next ten years.
The Senator called cancer "the number one fear in America," in interesting contrast to many of the terrorism-heavy speeches of his fellow Republican contenders.
