CPAC Board Member on Giuliani: 'They're Waiting to Be Sold'

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's decision to speak Friday at 12:00 pm ET to this year's Conservative Political Action Conference has made the absence of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who will be in Utah and Arizona, "more conspicuous," according to an aide working for a McCain rival.

"The definition of conservative is what you believe, not which meetings you attend," counters McCain spokesman Matt David, who knows his candidate can boast of many key conservative supporters around the country.

When asked a year ago if McCain could overcome doubts among conservatives in his second presidential run, American Conservative Union President David Keene, the chief sponsor of the CPAC conference, told ABC News: "Frankly, I doubt it."

On the eve of this year’s '08er speeches to CPAC, Kirby Wilbur, a member of the CPAC board of directors, told ABC News that he thinks McCain has "sunk deeper in the hole with conservative activists since last year, citing his criticism of President Bush on global warming, his "teaming up with Ted Kennedy on immigration," and the "fact that he has snubbed" this year's conference.

Despite a record on social issues which he described as being "pretty liberal," Wilbur was more optimistic about Giuliani’s chances of winning over the gathering of conservative political activists thanks to his recent pledge to appoint "originalist" judges, his record of "turning around New York," his willingness to "defend President Bush on the war," his strong standing in recent polls, and his leadership on 9/11.

"They’re not sold yet," said Wilbur. "But I think they’re waiting to be sold."

As a lifelong Republican...I say Go Rudy Go!!

I have seen Rudy twice in the last few weeks stumble and wander through speeches. He is trying hard, but he is hardly presidential. He says obvious and inane things. He thinks his listeners are as ignorant about the world as he. As many Republicans, I am waiting to be impressed and motivated. One note on his heroism: ask his former Deputy Mayor who suffered lung problems post-9/11 if he is a hero. Ask the victims of the tragedy how he has helped them, while lining his pockets. Let us begin to ask hard questions about this emperor who still has clothes on, thanks to a feeble press that prefers to cover Anna Nicole Smith, instead of vetting the Rudies of the political world.
