Dem. Leaders: House and Senate War Resolutions Near Unanimity

ABC News' John R. Parkinson Reports: Two Democratic congressional leaders, Sen. Charles Schumer D-N.Y., and House Democratic caucus chairman Rep. Rahm Emanuel D-Ill,. say congressional democrats are near unanimity on their resolutions to withdraw U.S. combat troops from Iraq.
"Democrats are united together. The House and Senate resolutions are very, very similar," Schumer said at a Friday morning press conference. "And we are going to keep working and working and working till we can force this president to change course."
Emanuel says the Bush administration's policies fail to hold Iraqis accountable for their future, do not adequately fund the war in Afghanistan and do not provide sufficient funding for veteran healthcare.
"The administration policy, in short, is more of the same, more troops, more time, more money," he said.
The Illinois legislator believes the Democrat's resolution should address all of these concerns.
"Democrats are asking for something and that is more focused and works: to focus on fighting Al Qaeda, to get us out of policing a civil war, making sure, as we've done on the 9/11 and you guys are trying to do, that we are protecting America's home front, and once again focus on the threats that exist to America, rather than getting us bogged down in a civil war where we only are being asked for more troops, more time and more money and more of the same," Emanuel said.
Schumer says President Bush may have the power of the military and foreign affairs, but Democrats possess the advantage of having the American people on their side. "Our bills are only millimeters apart. It's the president who is a mile away from what the American people want." Schumer added.
Schumer, who serves as chairman of Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee believes the heat is on Senate Republicans running for reelection in 2008. "The president is leading his Republican colleagues off a cliff," the liberal democrat said. "The president's alone with the vice president and a few other allies in their bunker," he added. "They're not seeing what's happening in Iraq. They're not seeing what's happening here in America. And they're doing so at the peril not only of themselves, but of our troops and of America."

I wonder if the President is talking to the portraits yet? I wonder if the bunker is decorated in a 1950's Roy Rogers cowboy theme? The administration is divorced from reality...and trying to drag the rest of the country into that never-neverland with them. The predictable Republican response will be - 1.) The Democrats don't have a plan (although this sounds just like one to me), 2.) Requiring timetables for progress and disengagement weakens us in the War on Golbal Terrorism. The Iraq War has nothing to do with terrorism...but has weakened us as a nation and our involvement promotes terrorism with each life lost. The Republicans keep trying to convince us that Iraq has something to do with terrorism - although they are unable to provide any evidence of that. The war in Iraq is nothing more than a misadventure brought about by stubborn meglomanics - haven't we paid enough for this failed policy? If not now, then when?
