Edwards' Defend Katie Couric Interview
March 26, 2007 6:19 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: 2008 presidential candidate and former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C., is defending CBS News anchor Katie Couric, whose interview of the Edwards' aired on 60 Minutes Sunday night.
"Katie Couric asked questions that the American people are asking themselves, and I think they were completely legitimate questions," Edwards told reporters today during a roundtable discussion in San Francisco.
In an unusual move, the Edwards campaign released a statement today in support of Couric, following what the campaign observed as "criticism of Katie Couric for her interview."
"I think the American people deserve answers from me and from Elizabeth to those questions," said Edwards. "I thought the questions were fair. Tough. I thought they were tough, but they were fair," he said.
During the interview, Couric probed the Edwards' decision to continue campaigning for president, despite the news this week that Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards has been diagnosed with incurable bone cancer.
Criticism of Couric's interview surfaced in the blogosphere, some suggesting the interview was 'insensitive' and 'callous'.
However the Edwards campaign said Mrs. Edwards felt the interview was fair.
"Mrs. Edwards also called Ms. Couric today to thank her for the interview and to say that she and Senator Edwards thought the interview was both thorough and fair," said Jonathan Prince, Edwards' deputy campaign manager.

Gees I get so tired of people in this country. Why the hell can't you just LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE. The Edwards decision is their business, NOT YOURS. Katie Courics questions were fine and the Edwaards had no problem with them. I am so fricking sick and tired of the jackasses in this country who think they have a right to judge everybody, dictate their own judgement on people. Get off of it will you? You are all so lilly white and perfect. It's disgusting. Try living your own life and leave people alone.

The Katie bashing is getting old!
Katie has her own CANCER "story" to tell. IMO, she is not insensitive about this topic.Rather, she is committed to confronting the issue whenever the opportunity is presented.
Google is your friend. Check out her history before you judge.Thanks.

You know, Katie, some people say it doesn't take guts or nerve to pummel a sick woman and her candidate husband, when you know he can't fight back.
Some people say it's hypocritical to criticize the Edwards for continuing their careers inspite of the illness, especially because that's exactly what you've done.
And some people would say that a real journalist wouldn't ever quote "some people." They'd quote a real source.

I thin it was very callous, terrible, and disagree that these are questions america is asking. You can ask legit questions about campaigning without being mean. Katie took an unnecessarily low road.

She should not have asked them how they told their two young children. That was private and they were kind to answer it.

Katie Couric is a very bad interviewer. She was insensitive and asked a question that made Mrs Edwards jaw drop and then she regrouped and gave an answer. The Edwards are gracious and of course would not say anything bad about the interview.

Did they also ask how she felt about working/not giving up her career while her husband suffered from colon cancer?
Why are they going out of their way for Katie? She's not very effective in her role.

Please bring Dan Rather back, who hired or anyway?

I think everybody needs to get off Katie's back-she was doing her job. The Edwards's knew going into the campaign, and especially deciding to stay in the campaign with Mrs. Edwards's illness, that there were going to be some difficult questions to answer. It is not now anybody elses business to decide if that is right or wrong for the Edwards. I have serious concerns about electing a president that I know would be going through such personal struggles during his presidency-both because he could be distracted from his work and because he could be distracted from his wife. If that is his decision, if we are to elect him we are entitled to ask questions to try and understand his thinking and motivitation as it goes to his character and how he will act as a president.

The correct response from Edwards should have been "Some people are saying this? Name one!" because there only is one, the jackass Rush Limbaugh, whose name and ideas have no business is legitmate politics. Couric is a depserate moron who is out of her depth. Maybe a quick change to GOP tool/antagonist will help her career...
But Edwards is such a perky little boyscout he wouldn't know how to confront someone if his life depended on it, which is what makes him such a bad candidate for prez.

I admire John and Elizabeth. They certainly took the high road during the interview. Katie looked cold and callous. Ske was perched on her chair in attack mode. Many of her questions were completely inappropriate, like asking them how they told their children. Katie of all people SHOULD know how insensitive that was. Shame on her.

Katie Couric does not belong on 60 minutes anyway. She is an ineffective interviewer, difficult to watch, and out of her league at 60 minutes. This was pretty obvious with the Edwards interview. She simply does not come across as a serious interviewer but rather as a "cutsy wutsy" interviewer - not a news anchor personality at all. I watched 60 minutes for years - now I don't - why? Katie Couric. I don't watch the CBS evening news for the same reason. Katie Couric should return to morning news where her personality is a much better fit.

I think Katie Couric was fair in her questioning of the Edwards. She asked the questions we all wanated to ask. It was tough I would have to admit but the Edwards handled it properly. I mean the guy is running for leader of the free world...people deserve to know these things...

I never liked Katie Couric as a "reporter" she never struck me as a professional...
she was ok years ok as another"Kelly Ripa"type but other than that-she doesn't cut it....

It occured to me that Ms. Couric was only playing devil's advocate and beating the Faux news people to the punch. She knew that the Edwards were going to be asked these questions along the way and now that they have very candidly answered these tough and outrageous questions, (that believe me, the Faux people would have no qualms in asking them.) these questions no longer have any value or power to them. The Edwards are unbelievably gracious and honest people and our country would benefit greatly having them in the White House. We need integrity in our WHite House again so we can once again believe in our government. Vote John Edwards!

It is typical of the graciousness of John Edwards that he would speak well of Couric, even though her outrageous, pathetic, disgusting interview showed that she is utterly and completely incompetent as a professional newsperson and should be relegated to just fluff interviews on morning shows.
The former Tiffany Network has now become the K-Mart Network.

I have more trust in a John Edwards running this country with personal problems than George Bush WITHOUT personal problems ANY DAY!!!
My gut feeling is that the Edwards are wonderful people. Mrs. Edwards is a super partner and a very brave woman.
My prayers go out to them.

Millions of dollars a year, millions. CBS needs serious help in their hiring processes! Couric proved exactly what she is in the interview with the Edwards couple. An 'Inside Edition' interviewer, not a newswoman, journalist or any other professional term. It was difficult to watch such ineptness. Why did they choose her for the interview? Because of her personal battle with her husband's and sister's cancer? I guess she thought she would come off too sensitive if she empathized a little with her guests! What a waste of money.
