Edwards Punchy about Coulter

ABC News' Paul Fidalgo Reports: In an interview for the television program "Texas Monthly Talks," former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., made his feelings about Ann Coulter known without saying a word.

Asked by host Evan Smith what he would say to Coulter if she were sitting in his place, Edwards laughed and curled his fingers into a fist, miming a punch.  "No, there's absolutely nothing I. . ." began Edwards. "I would say to you, 'grow up.'"

Columnist Ann Coulter spurred a great deal of controversy last week when she used the term "faggot" when referring to Sen. Edwards in an address to the conservative CPAC conference.

"I grew up in the south in the 50's and 60's where I heard a lot of bad words used in very hateful ways to describe people," Edwards told Smith, "and I think it's very important when that happens, no matter who's saying it and who is on the receiving end of it. . .for all of us to speak out and denounce it because otherwise it becomes acceptable.  And it's not acceptable."

The interview covered other ground, as well. Asked about the feasibility of impeachment proceedings against the president and vice president, Edwards said that with something as important the war in Iraq, "I would not divert attention away from that for the purposes of an impeachment proceeding."

Edwards also addressed how trial lawyers like himself have, for some, acquired a bad reputation, saying, "I think that there's been an awful lot of money and effort spent to demonize. . .lawyers who represent ordinary people. And it's a pretty extraordinary thing that if you represent a family or a child, that you would be demonized."

The edition of "Texas Monthly Talks" with Edwards is scheduled to air on Texas public television stations on March 15.

The name-calling going on between people in media and politicians remind me of a story I Once heard.
A couple was yelling at each other calling each other names. Meanwhile, the sink is backed up; the baby is crying; the car won’t start. The only thing the couple could do was to keep calling each other names and trying to blame each other of who is at fault.
This country has many problems to deal with. What is the best way to finally end the Iraq War? What is the best way to improve Veterans health care? How can the US insure everyone in this country without raising one cent in taxes? Let us begin with the last problem then work backwards.

I agree with Mr. Thelen. Ms. Coulter is an entertainer and is only out for publicity. The Democrats have a tendency to get sucked into these meaningless debates and false issues while the conservatives merrily go on their way revoking civil liberties, ignoring the middle class, and ruining our foreign policy by stupid adventurism. The typical response is "you have to fight fire with fire"...however, all this ultimately does is cause us all to lose focus and fail to address the real problems facing us as a society and as a nation. Those who engage in this process in the furtherance of their own agendas and to their own benefit place themselves above their country and should be judged accordingly. Now, can we move on and talk about something important...what is Paris Hilton doing these days?

But it seems that Dem's can't do anything right. People are still angry at Kerry for not standing up to smear tactics against him. Now Edwards get's criticized for standing up to a vile woman. Your darned if you do and your darned if you don't.

I am happy that Edwards has responded. In fact I don't believe he responded strongly enough. He and all of us should shine the spotlight on anyone who supports this woman's career be it the newspapers who carry her or the news organizations who invite her on their show just so she can insult others who dare question the neo-con nonsense she so readily swallows.

I think Dem's need to grow a backbone and push back. People are naturally attracted to people that speak their mind if it's the truth.
