ABC News' Jake Tapper Reports: The House of Representatives voted today to create a new congressional committee, devoted solely to addressing the issue of global warming.

Legislation creating the new "Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming" passed 269 to 150, with 44 Republicans voting in favor of its creation.

"Global warming may be the greatest challenge of our time," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a statement released to media following the vote.

"In the House of Representatives, debate on global warming has been stifled for 12 years; we can't wait any longer," she said.

Sure we can, Nan.

We can wait another 20 years. Probably though, congress will need a bit more time than that just for the debate about it.

Keep us posted, k?

Boy, the Republicans are going to hate this one. Their solution for global warming, and every other environmental problem, is deregulation and permanent tax breaks for the responsible industries. I predict they will argue that global warming does not exist and is merely a normal cycle through which the planet is going...mankind has made no contribution to global warming...and so forth. Instead of finally accepting the irrefutable science behind this serious problem, they will tie any actions up in knots of obfuscation and denial. Apparently, they don't have a problem with the massive changes rapidly occuring on this planet and, like Social Security, deficit spending, and a host of other problems...will leave all this for future generations to sort out. Perhaps man is destined to disappear from this planet...if that happens, we can certainly say we had a hand in the outcome.

Thank God! Finally some action on this! America should be deeply embarrassed at the faith-based response our president has had to this crisis when the rest of the world seems to understand the scientific method. The Lord has given us the knowledge and tools to solve this problem, and ignoring it is an affront to Him. We are charged with caring for creation, not wasting it, and it's time America began leading again on this and several other issues. The 2008 elections can't come soon enough.

Low-hanging fruit for global warming reduction: Street Lighting and other outdoor lighting.
These things cost 10% or higher of all electricity used worldwide. The technology of street lighting is very wasteful and easily improved. Simple shielding that puts the light on the ground (and not in drivers eyes, residents windows, etc) is cheap and could lead to a 50% reduction.
Cutting the nightime electricity use nationwide by 50% reduces electricity consumption 5%. That's a lot of coal that won't get burned.
How about it, America?
Flagstaff,AZ already did it, how about you?
