Hagel Defends 'Interloper' Status
March 14, 2007 2:42 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., found himself explaining his "interloper" status Wednesday while speaking at a presidential candidates' forum two days after announcing that he was not entering the presidential race at this time.
"My status was pretty clear when I was invited," Hagel told ABC News when asked about what he himself referred to as his "interloper" status. Hagel noted that he had spoken to the firefighters last year adding that he is always delighted to speak to a "distinguished group of Americans."
What Hagel's answer did not specifically address is why he was speaking to the firefighters on the day that the International Association of Fire Fighters has devoted to hearing from presidential candidates with "skin in the game" rather than on another when it is hearing from members of Congress not running for president.
When Hagel was introduced to speak to the firefighters by Harold Schaitberger, the president of the IAFF, Schaitberger poked fun at his non-announcement saying: "Our next, oops. You see, I have here 'candidate'. But I'm going to say with foresight, 'our next speaker and likely candidate.'"
Jeff Zack, a spokesman for the I.A.F.F., told ABC News of Hagel last week:
"It was made absolutely clear to him that he was coming to speak at a forum where all the major presidential candidates were invited to speak."

Hold on a minute: HAgel wasn't "invited" as he claims.
On March 7 the Omaha World Herald reported that Jeff Zack said Hael invited himslef after a speech last year.
"After speaking to the organization's annual meeting a year ago, Hagel asked to return if it held a presidential event this spring, the association's spokesman, Jeff Zack, said Tuesday." [OWH 3/7/07]
"Hagel asked to return" is not "when they invited me". So the interloper is not just responding to requests, he is seeking opportunities to interlope.
