ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Supporters of former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) are hoping the ex-lawmaker turned actor will do more than just dabble in 2008 presidential waters by launching an official 2008 online presidential draft movement.

Reps. Zach Wamp (R-TN) and John Duncan (R-TN) announced on Monday the formation of Draft Fred Thompson 2008 along with the website www.fred08.com to motivate Thompson to seek the 2008 Republican nomination for president.

In an interview with ABC News, Congressman Wamp--who serves as chairman of the online draft effort along with Congressman Duncan--said he thinks Thompson is very serious about a White House run and expects the former senator to make a decision as early as May. "This is not some mild consideration, this is a serious serious consideration," he said.

Wamp says he sees "no strong candidates" among the current Democratic and Republican presidential field and does not believe Thompson would be at a disadvantage if he chooses to enter the race several months from now.

Thompson's draft effort is also being supported by Reps. Gresham Barrett (R-SC), Jeff Miller (R-FL) and Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), Wamp said.

The newly launched site declares "Fred is a real conservative, (f)rom tax cuts, to cleaning up government, to his vital role in the confirmation of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Fred Thompson has a record of fighting for conservative values."

The star of the NBC drama "Law and Order" generated a stir when he floated around the possibility of an '08 White House run just last week. "I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trail, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November," Thompson told Fox News.

Senator Fred Thompson stands out in a presidential race full of carpetbaggers and snakeoil salesmen.

Fred Thompson For President.

Senator Thompson please run. You are the only Presidential possibility for whom I could, in good conscience, work to get elected. May God bless you and lead you to run.

Most of the people I know are enthusiastic about Fred Thompson running for president. He needs to be encouraged at all costs.

As an Independent, my wife and I haven't had alot to shout (vote) about until former Senator Fred Thompson decided to test the waters for a possible Presidential bid. He brings a hugh hope for this nation by his decision, and will definitely have the votes and Blessings of us and our 6 children and anyone else we can reach....

I'm with Fred all the way.Suggest J.C. Watts or Joe Lieberman(to have him come over and annoy the Dems)for V.P.!!!!!

Posted by: R.D. BOYD, SR. | Mar 21, 2007 4:14:02 PM

It is my sincere hope that Fred runs, he is the first candidate for president that I have been enthusiastic about since Ronald Reagan, and the first one that appears based upon his record, to be able to follow in Reagan's footsteps.

Posted by: Steve Riley | Mar 21, 2007 4:39:11 PM

I almost killed myself running down the stairs this morning trying to get on my computer to send an email encouraging Mr. Thompson to run AND to send in the first political donation I've made to either a Party or Candidate since Republicans first lost their courage a few years ago. I haven't been this excited to see someone run EVER!! PLEASE FRED, WE NEED YOU IN OFFICE!!! Woo-HOO!!

Posted by: Betsy | Mar 21, 2007 5:15:46 PM

I'll support Fred Thompson all the way to the Whitehouse if he decides to run. No announced candidate from either the Democrat or Republican parties is as qualified to lead this country as is Fred. P pray he will decide to run.

The musings of many have suddenly turned to Fred Thompson for President, all seem to say, Yes!!!! I think he has piqued a great deal of interest in the common man....Let's hear more from him....I know several that will hold coffees, fund raisers.
We can't wait to get FRED on the move.....Let's go Fred, this Country needs a fresh approach and we believe you have it.....

Fred Thompson, is a great candidate for 2008! He would help the small person for several reasons. Those reasons starting with why does a Guy even run for office, to help those lower than himself. To pull those in Iraq out and other locations too.
Congratulations to Mr. Thompson. Hopefully the younger generation can help somehow.

Senator Thompson, Please announce your candidacy.
We need you.
The people need you.
The veterans need you.
The children need you.
Please put hope, pride, power and prayer back in the race, and in the government.

My father was in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, and was a retired veteran. I'm a retired veteran. my wife is a veteran, my son is a veteran. We will support you and thank you for giving us hope.

Mr. Thompson IS the buzz here in Iowa. Conservative enough for conservatives, able to unite the party and communicate to America.

I checked the American Conservative Union, Mr. Thompson has a lifetime 86 rating...not the highest, but high enough for the average conservative. If he gets the nomination I will be working hard as I can for him.

Posted by: Matt Green | Mar 22, 2007 12:35:49 AM

He has a presence which engenders trust, a calm assurance that is well translated through the media. I too wish his rating was higher than 86 but would love to vote for him--please announce your candidacy...and soon.

Posted by: Angela | Mar 22, 2007 3:06:21 PM

I had the opportunity to meet Fred last fall, and if anyone could be a better President, I don't know who it would be. He embodies all of the things we all want in a leader. As my ten-year old son who also met him says, "Fred for Prez!"

Posted by: Denise | Mar 22, 2007 3:21:10 PM

I'm a moderate... most on the right would call me a communist, and most on the left would call me a fascist. I would never even have considered giving money or effort to any presidential campaign. But I believe that Fred Thompson can heal the rift that has formed in our great nation. I believe that he has the wisdom and strength to lead us to solutions, and it makes me glad to hear that there is hope that he will run.

Posted by: Charlie | Mar 22, 2007 5:58:40 PM

The main reason the g.o.p.lost the house and the senate is because the base did not turn out.The base is excited about Fred Thompson. The left does not want him to run because they know he would easly take the nomination, and then the White House.I truly am excited about a Thompson campaign.Fred/Rudy 2008 sounds like a ticket that would be tough to beat!!!!

Posted by: Jeff | Mar 22, 2007 7:33:39 PM

All I have asked for is a candidate I can get behind and get excited about, that candidate is Fred Thompson. He stands for what I believe in. There is NO ONE in this race so far I would get up off the couch to vote for. I'd run all the way to vote for Thompson! Please give us a chance to put an honest man in office.

Posted by: Jannie | Mar 22, 2007 11:56:44 PM

The Knoxville News Sentinel has posted an online news article revealing that the so-called grassroots "Draft Fred Thompson 2008" unauthorized political committee was actually launched by former Thompson political aide Dean Rice.

Federal Election Commission records also that the "Draft Fred Thompson 2008" unauthorized political committee is currently unfunded, "nada" --- that is to say, with zero dollars in contributions from all these phanton "Thompson for President 2008" supporters. The abovementioned information should be the real Draft Thompson For President story reported by ABC News...

Having Fred run for President would be like having a cool glass of water on a 100 degree day! Come on Fred, the money will come and the voters will seal it. Make Our Day!!!

Fred Thompson is the right person for president. We need his straight-forward conservative beliefs and solid moral convictions to lead America. No more wishy-washy, politically correct hog wash, we need someone who will stand up for America and her citizens. Fred would restore America to the strong, powerful country of Regan era. GOD BLESS AMERICA

FDT has my vote, ever since I heard him say that he would pardon the Texas border agents, "right now".
No waiting to see what the polls and focus groups say, do it now because it is the right thing.
What else can I do to encourage and support him ?
Contributions will be forthcoming.

We (the country) need you to run for President in '08. You are the only real, down to earth American that can point this country in the right direction. We need your leadership and vigilance to keep the Dem's from running the United States of America in the ground!

You'll have my vote in '08 if you decide to run!!

Good Luck!

I cannot honestly recall ever seeing the current level of excitement generated by anyone considering a candidacy....and I've been through more than three decades of sizing up Presidential hopefuls.

As a moderate independent who cares more about integrity and intelligence than the latest buzz issues of the day, I can more than envision Fred as the next American President. It is glaringly apparent that he would be a highly competent and fair leader.

Posted by: Liam Sutherland | Mar 25, 2007 6:24:30 PM

Honesty, Integrity, Willingness to stand for even unpopular convictions, Ability to communicate, conservative, couragous, experienced, protective yet bold . . . that's all we're asking for in a President. Maybe Fred Thompson is that man - Maybe what the country needs is a wise "Grandfather figure" to cut through all the politics on both sides, line up on the outside, catch the ball and carry it for the winning touchdown. Fred . . . we already know how the others are going to carry the ball - Can we say fumble?

Posted by: Paul | Mar 25, 2007 8:15:15 PM

In my hunble opinion we have not had a "Statesman" in this country for far too long so we are way past overdue and Fred Thompson more than qualifies. For far too many elections I have voted for the lesser of two evils and I would love to actually cast a vote for someone I like, respect and in whom I have hope and faith. We desperately need so many things changed, cleaned up, straightened out and Fred Thompson is, I think, the only person out there who could and would get us turned around and headed back in the right direction. We need someone with good, old fashioned values and walking-around sense and sensibilities to undo some of the ridiculous "political correctness" and idiocy under which our country currently operates. Everyone I knew feels as I do so we are not in the minority, although we have been ignored forever. I will even, for the first time in more years than I care to count, work for the local Fred Thompson headquarters and campaign to get him elected! Now that's something I never expected or dreamed I would be al be to say again in my lifetime! I am all enthused and hopeful, so please, Senator Thompson, help us! God bless and keep you.

Posted by: Myra Hoen | Mar 26, 2007 11:26:53 AM

Former Senator Thompson could very well be the RNC's secret weapon!

Giuliani, McCain, Romney, Gingrich, Brownback, Hunter... they all have their positives and negatives, but Mr. Thompson is one guy who I could and feel proud to campaign for. For what it's worth, you've got a vote down here in Texas, Mr. Thompson!

Posted by: Victor | Mar 26, 2007 8:03:59 PM

I believe in the Providence of God and I think that Fred Thompson is the answer to our prayers! But God will not do everything for us -- we are all going to have to work hard to get him to run and when nominated -- to help him WIN! I hope that every conservative and moderate citizen will look at Fred Thompson as the ONLY realistic answer to the leadership void that will develop at the end of President Bush's term. We need someone who is strong from the inside-out instead of someone who is constantly being led by the nose by radicals on either end of the political spectrum. We need Fred Thompson!!

the only poss. candidate who shares my philosophy 100%. He is
also the person who is definately
able to capture the nomination
hands-down and defeat any democrat
nominee in 2008, in my opinion!
I strongly urge him to run!!!

Posted by: Jay Martufi | Mar 27, 2007 11:54:24 AM

Fred is the first candidate in many years that I can be excited about supporting. We need to restore integrity, honesty and common sense to our government.

Posted by: Gerald Foster | Mar 27, 2007 1:07:10 PM

We need a man who will attack the corruption in Wash. D.C. Someone who will jail those who are hiring illegal aliens and secure our borders. Someone who regulates business and is not it's slave. Someone who will attack Pork, get rid of special interest group financing of elections, support education of Americans. We need someone that is fed up with politics as usual and returns only by demand because of their moral integrity. We need someone who is not going to sell us out to foreign interests or try to save the world. We need you Fred. So let's get to it ole boy and go get our country back. I'll be there all the way. Normally, on any website mentioning a conservative in a positive light, there are just as many negative comments as there are positive. We all know the "tin foil hat crowd" lives on the internet and they purposely go to conservative blogs and wedsites to talk trash. This is done to cast doubt about a particular conservative and demoralize us. That's all the Libs and the Media did to win in '06. I think it speaks volumes that there is not 1 negative comment on here (and this is abcnews after all) about Fred Thompson.

My opinion on Fred:

1. He's a proud conservative, solid on our issues.

2. He can articulate our message.

3. He's not afraid of the Lib Media.

4. He's for border security. (although I do wish he would come around on deportation of the current illegals, anything can be done if we put our minds to it)

5. He speaks of States Rights, which is the basis of the Constitution, and I haven't heard that from anyone in my lifetime.

6. Since he is proud conservative like Reagan, he will gain the support of the moderates.

7. Oh, and I love all his movie roles (especially in Barbarians at the Gate)

The only thing I want to hear from him is that he will clean out the career Libs in State, Justice, and any other Department that will undoubtedly undermine his administration the same way they have done to Pres. Bush.

You certainly will have my vote Fred, and I will do all I can to convince others!

RUN FRED RUN as many above have said. I miss Reagan terribly and I know that you would be a great President also.

I would love to see JC Watts as your VP. Man, what a ticket!

Listen to us, Mr. Thompson, we are out here waiting for you...

Posted by: Karen Heim | Mar 27, 2007 3:54:15 PM

I too believe in the Providence of God and believe that Fred Thompson is the kind of leader that we have been praying for.

The ONE DOLLAR bill; everyone in America uses it almost daily. On the back is part of THE GREAT SEAL with the EYE OF PROVIDENCE and the motto ANNUIT COEPTIS. This alludes to the many signal interpositions of Providence in favor of the AMERICAN CAUSE. The CAUSE OF AMERICA is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Providence means a manifestation of divine care or direction.

"I entertain a fond hope that the same kind providence which has conducted us so far in our journey will open a way for the future happiness and prosperity of the United States." – Secretary of Congress, Charles Thomson, 1783

Fred, I believe that God has placed you in this world at this time to lead this country and to support the above beliefs that this great country was founded upon. Please help us to help you answer his call. Individually, we can accomplish very little. But together, we can change a nation.

May God bless you and keep you in all that you do.

I and my family and friends all want Fred Thopmson to run for president. Fred an honest man. All of those who are running are back stabbing two faced liers.

America needs an honest MAN in the White house. That man is Fred Thompson.!

America needs Fred Thompson to take
back control of the Mexican's puppet Judges working in the USA , Restore, support & enforce the existing border laws and completely kill Bush's plan for the so-called North American Union
with Mexico and Canada . He can do these things by following U.S. Law .

Posted by: Bob Heron | Mar 27, 2007 10:56:04 PM

Fred Thompson reminds me so much of the late President Ronald Regan. He is the only man running that I can throw my support behind. A true conservative, I believe he is the one person who would bring honesty and integrity back to the oval office. I am looking forward to campaigning for Fred Thompson should he decide to join the race in 08'. Run Fred run, please.

Reporting from out here on the Left Coast, let's be very clear on this point. A Fred and Condi ticket is the Democrats' worst nightmare.

Posted by: Randell Young | Mar 29, 2007 12:55:53 AM

With Fred, I wouldn't need to campaign "against" a democrat, I would only need to campaign "for" an good politician.

Posted by: Apollo | Mar 29, 2007 1:57:08 AM

I had hoped Fred would run against Bush the last time. I believe that he is the only Rep. who can beat H.Clinton at this time.
Please sir, give the people some hope and let the PEOPLE of this nation put you in the White House!

Although I never have voted democrat and probably never will, the last republican I worked for to get out the vote was Ronald Reagan. Fred, I would work to get you voted. I sincerely believe that this country is in desperate need of the principled conservative leadership that you would provide. Just as Reagan made us stand tall again, I believe you would, too. At this point in history, Fred, we need a real leader who knows how to distinguish between personal and national interests. We need someone who will choose what is right over political convenience and expediency. Please run, Fred.

Posted by: Joe | Mar 29, 2007 9:22:18 AM

Is this for real? I have been saying for years that Fred would make a great candidate for President! Gun control, abortion, GLBT Perversity, pork barrel spending, border control, taxation ad nauseum, hilarycare, cut and run war policies . . .!!!
Please, Fred, PLEASE, run for President and show America what it means to be a leader!!!

Posted by: Rob | Mar 29, 2007 11:03:22 AM

I have never even registered to vote since I have been eligible. (1992) I have never felt compelled to vote FOR anyone in my life. I have also never felt any duty to go out and vote for a candidate that I simply feel is the better of two when I don't care that much for either one. Most people might assume I am lazy and uneducated about politics, but I assure you, I have studied a lot of political theory and pay a lot of attention to political news, even though it routinely disgusts me.

The day Fred Thompson announces his candidacy, I will register to vote and go find the campaign HQ in Knoxville to volunteer.

Sen. Thompson,

AMERICA NEEDS YOU!!!

Please run for President, and save this great country. The moral conservatives have no one to vote for and so many of my friends have decided unless someone likes you runs they will stay home election day (we are talking about people who have always voted, and veterans) The choices are not good right now.

I am sorry for the terrible loss your family has suffered in the past and I admire how you left the senate to take care of your family, but now AMERICA needs you.

This Presidental election is the most important since the Ronald Reagan election and we are being taken over by the evil forces within our country and without a shot fired.

We are praying, at our little church, for you Fred. We helped pray President Bush through his attacks and we will do the same for you. America needs you to continue the assignment the Lord has given President Bush to keep the GWOT going and bring peace in our life times.

These are troubling times Fred, weakness is not the answer and we know that it is a demanding assignment but what is your life all about? Isn't this a calling God has for you?

America needs you now more than ever. Your victory will probably lead to a solid Republican congress in 2009. In any case, I just pray that Republicans will learn from the defeat of 2006: ignoring the people, especially in the conservative Heartland is a recipe for national disaster ... and lost power for all Republicans.

I want to help deliver Virginia's vote, starting here at the First Landing in Virginia Beach. Count me in as a serious supporter!

Dear Senator Thompson,

There is a buzz of excitement among my family and friends with the anticipation of Fred Thompson for President 2008. Your strong conservative values and sincere love of country over politics is what we need in a leader. Please run...I know Texans will support you in a HUGE way!

God Bless.

I'm a Republican from NY, and currently none of the GOP candidates excite me. I would urge Senator Thompson to run. Our Nation needs a strong leader after Persident Bush leaves. We need a Conservative like President Regan the Good Senator can fill that VOID. Please Senator run in 08. I already have a spot on my front lawn ready for a FRED08 lawn sign. My whole family is prepared to vote for FRED.

Mr Thompson, we need you! To most people I know, you perceived as someone with dignity & integrity.
My sons are in the military and need someone to get things done, for the right reasons.
Surround yourself with similar people and see what great things you can accomplish.
Call when you need help.

Thanks,
Tim

I can think of no candidate since Ronald Reagan that has the gift of incredible commanding articulation mixed with steadfast, conservative core beliefs. As soon as i heard Fred Thompson might run, my hope for the future was renewed.

I have not been excited at all by the thought of the "big three" running for president. For years I've felt that Fred Thompson would make a truly great president. I hope he does for the sake of our country and for all of us citizens.

There is only one thing to say = RUN, FRED, RUN!!!!!!!

I thought he should run years ago.
This is the image needed. No nonsense.

When he left the Senate I was saddened because I always thought he would be a great candidate. I liked his common sense most of all. The other night I saw a clip of President Reagan speaking and remembered how great he was - I think I will feel the same way when Fred Thompson IS President. I'm going to think positively and not ask him to please run - I'm going to take it for granted that he is running and that I'm helping with his campaign here in Texas!!! FDT in '08!

Fred Dalton Thompson is the only real potential candidate we have out there. None of the present presidential candidates is a true conservative. And, they are all soft on social issues because they think it will enhance their appeal. For that matter, I do not believe President Bush is a true conservative. He is just another politician out for himself who knows how to spend money like a liberal...
