ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: ABC News has learned Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi plans to visit Syria next week to meet with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.  The visit will make Pelosi the most senior U.S. official ever to meet with President Assad.

Pelosi will be traveling to Syria has part of Congressional delegation.  On the trip, she also plans to visit several other countries in the region, including Israel, where she will deliver a speech to the Knesset.

Pelosi's visit to Syria would come as the United States has severed high-level contacts with Assad's government.

The administration recalled the U.S. ambassador to Damascus after the February 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri in Lebanon.  There has been very little high- or mid-level U.S. contact with Syria since then.

Last December, a delegation of four Senators visited Syria, a trip that was made over the objections of the Bush Administration.  At the time, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized the trip as unhelpful.

Traveling with Pelosi will be Congressmen Keith Ellison (D-MN), Nick Rahall (D-WV), Tom Lantos (D-CA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), and David Hobson (R-OH).

Great, Now Democrats are openly talking to the very governments that sponsor the people that want to kill me and you... and our troops in the middle east. What a bunch of idiots...

Of course, a different view of this meeting would be that terrorism works and terrorism will bring democrats to their knees...

Of course she is including CAIR's congressional representative from Minnesota in her party.

This is just another indication that for all of her experience she appears to be intellectually challenged in the dealing with terrorist sponsers.

She claims to support our troops, yet she goes running off to have tea with the enemy. Why can't she stay home and work to get a REAL military funding bill passed?

What is the matter with these people? Purposely undermining the President is beyond vile. They pander to despots and terrorists while mouthing their phony patriotism to Americans. They disgust me.

I also do not understand why she has to undermine the administration in this way. The administration seems to be fighting the good fight alone while others in this government go out to demean the administration and the United States.

Has Nancy Pelosi become the new Jesse Jackson? Of course Mr. Jackson never pandered to our enemies as Speaker of the House.

I'm ashamed of the quality of people who have been elected to represent US citizens. Nancy Pelosi is a disgrace to America.

What? Come one people. When you have enemies and you want to resolve difference what do you do? TALK. When America had a more wise foreign policy, we at least TALKED to our enemies, even if we did so in private. Either country doesn't plan to disappear anytime soon, and we want improved foreign relations. We all know how to get there and I applaud Speaker Pelosi for stepping in where others won't. The idea of ignoring enemies is what helps to isolate us.

When your enemies are trying to kill you, you don't talk to them, you shoot them. They are killing our guys. I think she is treasonous! Better vote the other way next time America or there is real trouble coming our way.

She is now impeachable since she got promoted to Speaker--IMPEACH PELOSI.
She has access to our most critical intell.

I am a mother of four children. I teach my kids, to "Use their words." I encourage them to TALK to each other. Not beat each other up every time there is a problem, or to ignore each other.

Even if there was a major conflict. Which there often are with four kids in the house.

This is not 'undermining' the administration. It's called DIPLOMACY. Can Condolezza Rice, or anyone in this administration spell D-I-P-L-O-M-A-C-Y? I've been wondering that for a while...

She does support our troops. That's why she's trying to get them the hell out of a war zone! And she's not having 'tea' with any enemy.

Grow up folks. So many are walking around in grown up bodies, yet have the reasoning and historical capacity of a bunch of spoiled American kids.

Uhmmm I think the situation with Syria is a little more complex than trying to get your 4 children to "get along". I am sure your children were raised in a loving, respectful of others type of home. Can you say that about the Syrians...dont thinks so.

Curious, if a kid is beating the tar out your kid have you taught him to just take the punch, it will be over soon? I'm all for turn the other cheek, but only once, then make sure you hit them hard enough that they can't hit back! See where I'm going w/that?!

We have tried D-I-P-L-O-M-A-C-Y. Does not W-O-R-K.

I do believe there were more terrorist attacts under the Clinton presidency. But lets not point fingers on who flubbed (Clinton).

However, I would really like to know what papers Sandy Berger took? Must have been something pretty telling to have someone go in and steal them!

And by the way, I think we are all grown up here, even you with your silly comments.

Aside from "what" Nancy Pelosi was doing in Syria... what was she thinking wearing a skirt of that brevity in a muslim country? Would she wear such abbreviated attire to an audience with the Pope? What CAN she be thinking?
