SC Republicans Blast Edwards, One Week Early
March 13, 2007 6:41 AM
ABC's Jake Whitman Reports: Democratic Presidential hopeful John Edwards doesn't even have to visit South Carolina to feel the wrath of that state's Republican Party.
On Monday, the South Carolina Republicans issued a press release, blasting Edwards' recent comments on taxes.
"John Edwards campaigns that there are 'Two Americas,' but he needs to know that there's only one South Carolina - a conservative state with conservative voters who supported conservative Republican candidates up and down the ballot last November," the release said.
Edwards' "liberal record of supporting labor unions, abortion and greedy trial lawyers wont get him any South Carolina votes in 2008," Party chairman Katon Dawson said in the release, dated Monday.
Why attack Edwards on a day when the former Senator wasn't even in the state?
South Carolina GOP officials now tell the Associated Press it was a misunderstanding. The release was supposed to be sent out to coincide with Edwards' appearance in South Carolina at a private fundraiser scheduled for next week.
But make no mistake, even though the release was sent out a week early, state Republicans say they still feel the same about Edwards.
Edwards' campaign said it was taking the criticism in stride. Spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield told the AP, "I guess the misguided policies that leave hardworking American families behind aren't the only things that are off the mark at South Carolina GOP headquarters."
