ABC News' Stephanie Smith Reports: White House adviser Dan Bartlett said President Bush had received many complaints about US attorneys regarding voting fraud and asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in 2006 to stay on top of the matter.

"These U.S. attorneys serve at the discretion of the president," said Bartlett in a press conference from the President's trip in Merida, Mexico.

"That information - it's incumbent upon us to share it with relevant cabinet officers, it's incumbent upon the President as well. The President did that briefly in a conversation he had with the Attorney General in 2006," said Bartlett, quickly adding that the President did not have a political discussion about the attorneys.

Bartlett told reporters the President was hearing a lot of complaints from members of congress and state and local leaders about US attorneys regarding a voting fraud issue.

"There was a management review process and there was a determination made to remove seven US attorneys for cause," said Bartlett. "It was completely within the managerial discretion of the Attorney general and something the President supported," he said.

Bartlett explained that the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' Chief of Staff today was because information was not properly shared with key members of the Department of Justice and members of congress.

At no time did the White House edit, add to, or sign off on the list of US attorneys, said Bartlett. He said those are decisions that are made by the Department of Justice.

Bartlett also said that the Attorney General made the right decision regarding the firing of the attorneys, and the president supported his decision.

Bartlett said Gonzales is a "stand-up guy" and the President absolutely has full confidence in him.

The Bushy administration is grooming this guy to be inserted as the next Iraqi dictator.

Gonzales is just learning the ropes at this point. Soon he'll be a law-writing, genociding, nuclear-bomb-making fat cat.

He'll be showing up at parties with Kim Jong and Ahmadinejad all of them smoking crack and big fat cigars, eating rasberry poptarts, and arguing over which of them makes the lives of their peasants worse.

Of Course the White House backs the Attorney General. His actions are right on track with what the Bush administration has been doing since taking office. Yes, Gonzales should go. Vice President Cheney be out the door right behind him.

How could so many voters make such a terrible mistake.......TWICE!!!

Bush would have sacked him by now. But he has not, which means he can stay.
Do we accept the President's decision or do we persist with calls for dismissal?

Who is really surprised? The are consistant in backing criminals and incompetency. The worst that will happen is that he will resign and continue to collect a salary.
