Clinton Ties Troop Funding to Withdrawal
April 10, 2007 6:48 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Eloise Harper Report: In a taped interview with MoveOn.org, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., held out the threat of withholding funding for U.S. troops in Iraq if President Bush does not agree to a timeline for withdrawal.
"I don't want to foreclose any options right now," Clinton said in the audio-only interview with the anti-war advocacy group. "You know, I don't think we should tell President Bush what we will do. We have to keep the pressure on him not to veto it."
Clinton's comments were an implicit effort to contrast herself with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., a top rival for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, who took heat from some in the liberal blogosphere last week for telling the Associated Press that "Nobody wants to play chicken with our troops on the ground."
While the former First Lady kept the option of withholding Iraq war funding on the table, she stopped short of committing to any particular course of action if President Bush vetoes the current war funding bill which includes a March 2008 timetable for troop withdrawal.
"I'm not prepared to throw in the towel and basically concede either point that he, you know, will veto it and then we have to choose one of the strategies that are based on the premise of his veto," said Clinton.
The Senator and presidential contender is holding out hope that Bush can be swayed from vetoing the latest Iraq spending bill if there's public support for a withdrawal timetable.
Clinton's comments to MoveOn.org are part of a pre-recorded "virtual town hall meeting" that the liberal advocacy group is streaming over the Internet Tuesday at 7:00 pm ET with seven Democratic presidential candidates.

Clinton is making serious errors which she will not give her much credibility for the 2008 nomination. You just cannot tie funding to withdrawal of troops and deadlines. This is a war!

Hurray for Senator Clinton and Congress if they withhold funding for Bush's failed war policy. Bush is not a king, he is president and only congress has the right to declare war and withhold war funding as they see fit. A Democratic controlled Congress should no longer rubber stamp Bush's failed war policy with a blank check! Bush needs to act like a uniter and work with congress to end the iraq war.

I think the democrats will hang themselves with their own rope.
The only thing all dem senators agree on is their hatred for Pres. Bush....how sad.

Hilary Clinton is going to do anything that she feels will keep her in the spotlight and headlines regardless of who it may hurt. She is trying to manipulate again the American people and not thinking about the troops or their families or the message that we are sending by insisting on a deadline for withdrawal. Pelosi & Clinton are always looking for political gain for themselves, NOT the American people. We need fresh leadership and someone who can identify with the people. This is a war and like it or not, try to remember how stunned we were at 9-11. No one wants a repeat of that tradegy.

The more this woman does, the less likely she will get the support she is seeking.

ABC's comments fly directly in the face of the actual wording of the bill. The bill specifically states that funding WILL NOT be cut off for the troops. What the bill does say is that a time-table for withdrawal should be set. The only one who can cut off funds for the troops is Bush with his promised veto.
